About us
Urban Learners deliver bespoke architecture, art and design learning and outreach programmes for schools and communities on behalf of cultural spaces, places and the built environment industries. We have created and delivered exciting programmes and activities that include: Creative Workshops + Architectural Programmes + STEAM Learning Activities + Learning through Exploring + Cultural Events + Design Research + Urban Activities + Learning from Architecture + Volunteer Training + Equality, Diversity and Inclusion + Learning through Making + Collaborative Partnerships Talk to us about your ideas if you are interested in commissioning a creative learning or co-design programme for young people and children. You can contact us on info@urbanlearners.org if you would like to discuss your ideas Background Since 2018 we have worked with over 600 young people from schools across London and 150 volunteers from our clients’ organisations. Our architectural and educational background gives us the experience to develop creative outreach programmes relating to the built environment, the design process, public art, and curriculum including STEAM (that’s science, technology, engineering, art and maths). The learning experiences we design are engaging and accessible and focus on exploration, creativity and making, with multiple learning and physical outcomes. We work closely with clients and stakeholders, to fully understand their organisation and project aspirations, so that we can design and deliver the most effective and bespoke programmes. We engage with communities and work with volunteers from clients’ organisations or from multiple professional backgrounds, who contribute to our workshops. We prepare, manage and implement the programmes and provide feedback evaluations and reviews at the end of the programme.

I N T E R P R E T I N G our C I T I E S We’ve been investigating FIVE locations around London with first year architecture students from Ravensbourne Architecture & IDEAs ✏️ 🏙️ The workshops explore, sketch and record places and buildings enhancing students observational and analysis skills. With a particular emphasis on ‘how buildings work’, students are encouraged to analyse materials, structure and impact. We are super inspired by the student’s individual and collaborative sketches and their interpretative model making too. Special thank you to all the buildings and locations and especially Ravensbourne University Architecture Department, Alberto Villanueva Galindo, Luke Murray, Hwei Fan Liang, and others. Workshop locations: #southwark #cityoflondon #boroughmarket #olympicpark #greenwichpeninsula #kingscross There were so many incredible buildings explored on these tours, too many to mention individually but ranged from high tech modernist masterpieces such as RSHP Lloyds of London building to Leadenhall Market, from Stirlings 1 Poultry to RPBW Renzo Piano Building Workshop’s Shard from Grimshaw Architects London Bridge Station to Heatherwick studio’s Coal Drops Yard. With special thanks to the teams at The Leadenhall Building and Argent LLP’s King's Cross N1C for supporting our tours. 📸 Photographs and interactive 🗺️maps by Urban Learners - Urban Learners are a not-for-profit #architecture, #art, #culture and #heritage #education organisation delivering bespoke, #creative and aspirational #learning experiences for #young people and #children #architecture #architectureinschools #creativelearning - Venetia Wolfenden Andy Costa

We at Urban Learners are so proud to have collaborated with The Grimshaw Foundation and Grimshaw architects to develop and deliver this incredible #art and #architecture programme at the Royal Albert Hall and of course to all the amazing people and organisations involved who helped us bring together 160 students from 8 schools culminating in the ‘Big Build’ day. Thanks to the incredible artists Anna Lapwood, Rhael 'LionHeart' Cape Hon FRIBA, Corey Baker and Jess Gillam and special thanks to Chloe Grimshaw and Kirsten Lees for being amazing advocates for the programme to provide young people the opportunity to #create #collaborate and #explore. Thank you from Venetia Wolfenden and Andy Costa and the whole team at Urban Learners.
It’s one week on from the Big Build day of the Royal Albert Hall Associate Artists x Grimshaw Foundation education programme — Performance. Architecture. Design. Over 150 students from eight schools across London have, over six months, worked with the spoken word artist Rhael 'LionHeart' Cape Hon FRIBA, saxophonist Jess Gillam, organist and conductor Anna Lapwood and choreographer Corey Baker, immersing themselves in hands-on creative and making workshops, learning about the creative industries of dance, music, performance, architecture, and design. Inspired by each artist, this programme has enabled young people to explore how spaces can support, elevate and shape performance and explored the Royal Albert Hall, as a place, and all the elements and professions — from acoustics and lighting, to set design and sound — that create memorable experiences. It’s been an amazing experience for the students and the volunteers, fulfilling the Grimshaw Foundation mission to, through working with young people and schools, help foster a curious and creative approach and create better access to, and more diversity in, creative careers. Thank you to all our volunteers from Mott MacDonald, AKT II, Spence Harris Hogan, Momentum Transport Consultancy, Exterior Architecture Ltd, ING Media, MICA Architects. And to Urban Learners for bringing this programme to life and all the associate artists Royal Albert Hall. Urban Learners director Andy Costa and Year 2 architecture, interior architecture and urban landscape students from Ravensbourne University London were on tour at King's Cross N1C last week. Our students explored and were inspired by incredible projects by design practices including WilkinsonEyre, Bell Phillips, Heatherwick studio, David Chipperfield Architects, Allies and Morrison, Bennetts Associates, Eric Parry Architects, Piercy&Company, Squire and Partners, Stanton Williams among many others. Kudos to Argent LLP for their vision _ can’t wait to see how the students interpret what they’ve seen. We are loving working with Ravensbourne University and the amazing staff Alberto Villanueva Galindo, Jerome Tsui, Derek Yates, Luke Murray, Hwei-Fan Liang. #architecture #architects #interiorarchitecture #landscape #urbanlandscape #urbandesign #urbanlearners COSTA + WOLF

Urban Learners are delighted to be collaborating with the Grimshaw Foundation and the Royal Albert Hall to develop a new programme — Performance. Architecture. Design. (PAD). Which brings together over 160 secondary school students from across London and the RAH's four Associate Artists - Rhael 'LionHeart' Cape Hon FRIBA, Anna Lapwood, Jess Gillam and Corey Baker. At the heart of this project is a shared vision: to empower and inspire the next generation through the transformative power of creativity. Through exploring how the worlds of performance, architecture, and design work together to redefine spaces and experiences. A jam packed day at the Royal Albert Hall launched the programme, providing an immersive introduction into how light, space, sound and movement can be manipulated to alter or enhance the design and experience of a performance. The year long programme involves 32 workshops across 8 schools and will culminate in a 'big build' project bringing all the schools together at the RAH. We are thrilled to be working as part of such a talented team to spark creative minds and inspire young people.
