Collaborative architecture practice delivering clients their dream home, driving sustainable design + inspiring change

About us

No building as usual. That’s our mantra, and we’d love it to be yours too. We’re all living under the threat of a different, less liveable planet, and our mission is to deliver dream homes to our clients, drive forward sustainable design, and inspire change. We’re transparent risk-takers and positive disruptors. We’re generous with our knowledge, to our clients, to our partners, to curious students – in fact, to all our fellow humans. We question everything, hold ourselves accountable, and get our hands dirty, literally. By sticking our own necks out, we do whatever we can to make our clients feel comfortable and ready for what lies ahead. Studio Bark was founded in 2014 by Wilf Meynell. Our rigorous environmental ethos and ambitious design approach has been recognised within the industry and beyond; our unique Paragraph 84 private home Periscope House was featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs. We have a successful track record securing planning permission for ambitious designs on challenging sites across the UK. Our portfolio of built work encompasses residential and community projects with a specialism in bespoke homes. We have extensive experience delivering projects through Paragraph 84 (previously Paragraph 80) of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). In addition to architectural design services outlined in the Bark Client Journey, we offer site finding and site evaluation services drawing upon our detailed knowledge of planning policy. Depending on the project, specialist construction and fabrication services can be provided through our contracting arm, Studio Bark Projects. We have developed the widely-published U-Build flat pack construction system for aspiring self build clients. We’re also passionate about teaching and run regular student build programmes. In 2021 we launched ‘No Building As Usual’ as a more collaborative cross-sector approach to student live builds.

  • Turning Challenges into Approval: A Project's Journey We’re thrilled to share some feedback on the path to planning approval for Burford House: “Studio Bark managed to take an uncommon brief for a P84 house and holiday lodges and turn it into a set of complementary buildings that work really well together and in the landscape of the site as a whole.” This project came with its challenges, including navigating a complex planning process. The effort invested in overcoming these hurdles was acknowledged when the proposal was presented to the committee: “The hard and significant work that Studio Bark took to repair and build a fractious planning relationship was seen when the proposal was presented to the committee and the scheme wholeheartedly recommended for approval.” Collaboration, attention to detail, and persistence are at the core of our approach. Thank you to our client for their trust and partnership on this unique and rewarding project. • PLANNING PERMISSION for Burford House – our first residential & commercial #Paragraph84 project! Studio Bark is excited to share that Burford House, an energy-positive, carbon-negative home, has secured planning approval! 🏡🌱 This unique project blends the highest standards of architecture with historic construction techniques, using bio-based, locally sourced materials to create a stunning yet low-impact design. Pioneering with a rammed earth core and miscanthus-lime walls (a type of straw bale construction) for insulation and quick construction. Beyond the house, the project regenerates the land with infrastructure to support the client's businesses, these include:  🛠️ A converted chicken shed workshop for their construction prototyping business 🏕️ Three fully accessible holiday lodges offering immersive escapes in nature The lodges, designed with the same sustainable ethos, are oriented for breathtaking views while achieving exceptional ecological sensitivity. With on-site renewables, ultra-low-impact construction systems, and materials that far exceed the RIBA 2030 challenge, Burford House sets a new benchmark for net-zero design. • The average office fit-out lasts less than three years, creating mountains of waste. How do we change that? At County Hall, London, our U-Build system proved that sustainable, circular office design is possible. Using modular plywood panels, we created partitions, phone booths, and furniture that adapt to tenants’ changing needs—leaving no waste or permanent trace on this historic building. After two years on the third floor, the entire fit-out was relocated to the fifth floor and reimagined for Sustainable Ventures' growing climate-tech hub, home to over 120 start-ups. Our Associate Director Hannah Towler spoke to BBC News about our approach to this innovative space: https://lnkd.in/e7-q38hS #CircularEconomy #workplace #officedesign

  • Our ears pricked up when we heard about Architecture Today's #RegenerativeArchitectureIndex, and we couldn't be more pleased to be named a Front Runner. As a notable Front Runner to emerge from the #RegenerativeArchitectureIndex, we spoke to Studio Bark about #bioregionalism, material sourcing, and integrating the work of ecologists and arboriculturalists among others into the studio’s practice. "The majority of our projects involve these specialists from the start of Stage 2, allowing us to incorporate their insights as early as possible without risking client costs. Often, we delay certain design work until we have ecologists, arboriculturalists, and other specialists on board so we can collaborate proactively and iteratively." • Box House is where it all began for U-Build, and five years later we've been back on site to add a pre-planned extension to the house. The build took us just three weeks, with a team of students from University of East London as part of our #NoBuildingAsUsual program which aims to address the lack of diversity and climate literacy in the building industry. #extension #modularconstruction

Over the past few weeks, myself and Naomi Wright, have been busy guiding a student team in the construction of an extension to our pioneering kit-home 'Box House'. This was the first prototype U-Build home, originally built in 2017. One of the great things about working at Studio Bark is the opportunity to periodically escape the office and get hands-on with the building process. As a practice founded by University of East London alums, 'construction weeks' have always been a part of our DNA, evolving into a series of 'bark live builds' and more recently our 'no building as usual' initiative. We approach design and construction as two sides of the same coin. U-Build emerged from this ethos, and was conceived with the principles of self-build, circularity and adaptability in mind. This extension was a useful test-case in modifying the existing home and adapting it to the changing needs of an evolving young family. Overall the process was fairly smooth, though there were some challenges. The propriety roof system which was installed on the original house needed to come up, and all of the insulation was thoroughly bonded-down. To avoid putting all of this tapered insulation in the bin and instead reuse it, we needed to painstakingly cut this into small sections, which were coded and carefully stacked to one side. This was not a nice job, and soaked-up a large amount of site time! By contrast, the U-Build frame went from being a stack of plywood on a palette in a factory, to a fully assembled building shell on site in 5 days. Perhaps more of our profession could benefit from periodically escaping the computer, and turning our hands to the task of trying to build. Above all, I feel there is value in carving out spaces and opportunities for the next generation to encounter the physical realities of construction. Thanks to our student team Blazej, Hanan, Kacper, Lennart, Lina and Ritesh for their energy and engagement with the process! And thanks to Alan Chandler and Amor Gutierrez at UEL for inviting us back for Construction Week 2024. And of course to all Studio Bark and the U-Build crew Nick Newman, Oliver Berry and Morgan Trowland.
