The BBC recently published its Top 100 Women list, highlighting incredible female talent. It made me think about our portfolio and the businesses we’ve invested in that are led by inspirational women. Sabrina Del Prete of Kore Labs and Daniela Amodei of Anthropic are two great examples. Yet with only 16.3 per cent of high-growth tech companies led by women (according to Beauhurst) and just 8.96 per cent of equity investment going to female-led businesses since 2013, increasing diversity in the tech sector is something that needs to be addressed. Change is happening, but it feels slow. In the recent One to Win pitch competition hosted by TechWM, we were delighted to see female founders take centre stage. This groundbreaking competition showcased some of the incredible talent and innovation that is making the West Midlands tech scene so exciting. Rigby Group plc and SCC were delighted to back One to Win, which provided a platform for aspiring entrepreneurs to raise their profile and secure support to grow. Congratulations to Rachel Curtis, winner of One to Win, for her exceptional work with Inicio AI and to runners-up Natalie Wadley of ChangeMaker3D Ltd and Elliot Parnham of Skyfarer® LTD. There comes the point where autonomy becomes a priority for VCs, and Haatch experienced this a year ago. The other day, I read Chris Smith’s post about how Playfair allows Associates and Principals to lead deals and write cheques. This made me reflect on the changes we've made recently. 🤔 Letting associates and principals lead deals has been one of the biggest and best changes we've ever made. Our partners spend more time where it counts - supporting founders to build great companies. Meanwhile, our investment team has the autonomy to build an incredibly deep understanding of a founder's business, qualifying it for the fund while simultaneously recognising how the wide breadth of experiences within our team can be valuable to founders post-investment. #vc #venturecapital #autonomy #investing #startups #founders #fundraising #preseed #seed #business

🏆 Building the dream team... I was blown away a couple of months ago when we received over 450 applications for our Investment Analyst role in just 2 weeks! Not only was the number mind-blowing, but the quality was incredible. For those who don't know, we've moved to a model whereby we have a rolling 6-month analyst with us; you can read more about Gauri Kanodia's experience with a fantastic blog she published here: https://lnkd.in/dkP65JUs. Over the last two months, Jeremy Luzinda and Charlie Weavers-Wright have been leading the process of filtering, interviewing, conducting diligence, and shortlisting a final two out of the 450 applications—no small feat. A few weeks back, I met with the final two, and Jeremy and Charlie's brief was clear: "Fred, you need to decide who will be our next analyst." Unfortunately, I broke the brief. The quality, detailed work on mock investment memos, diligence on our investment process, and understanding of our portfolio, which both candidates had pulled together as part of the interview process, were so impressive that I couldn't decide, so I asked both to join us! I was blown away by the quality & detail 👏 I am therefore really pleased to share the news that both Marwa Ebrahim & Qurratu Aini Binti Hashim have joined the Haatch team in analyst roles and are now supporting the investment team on sourcing, diligence & progressing pre-seed & seed stage companies through our processes! A super opportunity and look forward to working with them over the next 6 months 🙏
