As we close out the year, let's take a moment to reflect on developments in #climatepolitics, particularly from the recent winter session of the Swiss parliament: 💚 Over the past two years, Switzerland decided over several crucial laws: the New CO2 Law, the Climate Protection Act, and the Electricity Act. The people have clearly shown their will for ambitious climate protection. 🤨 However, there is a need for caution. While these laws will come into force in January 2025, they have been significantly watered down in the ordinances. Furthermore, last week's parliamentary session resulted in budget cuts for climate protection, which is concerning. What remains is insufficient to achieve the goals we have set. 🏁 Goals are essential, but implementation is key. As we look to 2025, our plea in climate politics is simple: let's ensure we follow through on our commitments. We must allocate the necessary resources to achieve our targets. Let's use this reflection as a catalyst for continued action and collaboration in the new year. In Switzerland, we can make a meaningful difference and create a resilient and thriving future. 💪 #ClimateProtection #2025Goals Nathalie Moral Corinne Graessle Anna Alexandra Staubli Claudia P. Marco Schneider Maurin Rüegg Martin Meili Daniel Meili Ruedi Gerber Franziska Heidenreich > if you want to read more about the new laws, we recommend the article by Alex Tiefenbacherin, Link in comments.

Here comes our Clima Now Wrapped: In the beginning of this year, we identified for 3 strategic key areas within our investment focus. This is how it turned out for us: 🔋Green Energy Transition: 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐆𝐫𝐢𝐝 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 The continuous increase in renewable energies is driving the need for effective long-duration energy storage solutions that go beyond conventional Li-ion batteries such as thermal or mechanical energy storage. We also see rare metals and minerals as critical raw materials in the energy transition and are paying close attention to battery recycling technologies that address this. ➔ We have placed a focus on delving deeper into the area of Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) and have published an in-depth deep dive including a comparison of the various LDES technologies. 🌾Food & Agricultural System Transition: 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞-𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭 & 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 Upstream food production must become more sustainable and more adaptable to a changing climate. We are monitoring and supporting new agricultural practices and the further expansion of viable and climate-friendly low-tech food sources to meet the calorie needs of a global population of 10 billion people by 2050. ➔ To explore potential solutions, we conducted an in-depth analysis with over 15 expert interviews, focusing on innovations in green ammonia and alternative fertilizers. These solutions have the potential to reduce dependence on high-emission synthetic fertilizers while improving soil health and crop resilience to climate change. Our ultimate goal is to secure an investment that benefits both farmers and consumers. 🌊 Carbon Drawdown: 𝐁𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 The world's oceans have absorbed more than 90% of the excess heat caused by humans and offer significant potential for carbon dioxide storage (15 gigatonnes annually). However, they are threatened by increasing CO2 saturation and ocean acidification, which puts immense pressure on marine ecosystems. ➔ We have invested this year in the Hamburg-based company Planeteers, which accelerates the natural process of converting industrial CO2 by neutralizing it with limestone into mineralized water that is stored in the oceans for more than 10,000 years. Their method helps to counteract the acidification of the oceans caused by climate change. #ClimateTech #Investments #ImpactInvesting Nathalie Moral Marco Schneider Maurin Rüegg Corinne Graessle Anna Alexandra Staubli Claudia P. As we looked ahead at the beginning of the year, we now want to look back to the year 2024 in Climate Tech. It’s time to reflect: 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 2024: 🚧 The World Economic Forum Global Risks Report highlighted climate-related risks as the top global risks for the next 10 years. Despite initial optimism fueled by initiatives like the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act, climate tech funding dropped by 29% to $56 billion, with its share of total VC and PE investments decreasing from 11% to 8%. 🚧 Deals shifted from early-stage to mid- and late-stage transactions, indicating reduced risk appetite among investors. Large corporations played a more significant role and later-stage investments underscore the important role of early-stage investors such as Clima Now in nurturing innovative breakthrough technologies. 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬: 📈 Energy-related startups increased their share of climate tech funding to nearly 35% in 2024, aligning closer to their emission-based share. However, the built environment and industrial sectors remain underfunded, while mobility is overfunded. 📈 As global temperatures in 2023 rose to 1.45°C above pre-industrial level and with 2024 on track to be the hottest year ever recorded, adaptation and resilience (A&R) solutions gained traction. These solutions accounted for 28% of climate tech deals in 2024, highlighting a growing focus on addressing immediate climate change impacts. 2025 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤: 🔮 The outlook is mixed due to modest economic growth, global conflicts, and potential policy setbacks in the US, specifically in carbon capture and industrial decarbonization. However, the Inflation Reduction Act has already spurred $493 billion in clean technology investment, expected to have lasting effects. 🔮Europe is set to enhance innovation and decarbonization through initiatives like the Green Deal, addressing supply chain security and simplifying investment processes. 🔮The maturation of AI technology will significantly influence global sustainability efforts, necessitating careful monitoring of its environmental impacts. #ClimateTech #Investments #ImpactInvesting Nathalie Moral Marco Schneider Maurin Rüegg Corinne Graessle Anna Alexandra Staubli Claudia P. ⚖️ Subsidies, including tax concessions that reduce costs for recipients, are economic policy instruments designed to promote certain developments. A recent study by EPFL and the Université de Lausanne analyzed some of these tax concessions and reveals: 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐚𝐱 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬. 💸🔨 The study highlights the need to reassess both current and future subsidies and tax concessions for their climate impact, aiming to avoid unintended negative consequences. This reevaluation is crucial to prevent the inadvertent sabotage of climate protection measures and to ensure alignment with Switzerland's environmental goals. Clima Now supported the study financially. 👉 Learn more about the findings and numbers in the slides. 📉 Switzerland drops a whole 12 places in the latest CCPI - Climate Change Performance Index. The index assesses countries based on 4 categories: GHG Emissions (40%), Renewable Energy (20%), Energy Use (20%), and Climate Policy (20%). Switzerland scored particularly low in the latter two categories. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐬 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲: we set ourselves ambitious targets, but do not take the necessary measures to implement them. Despite aiming for a 50% emissions reduction by 2030, words are not followed by action: ⚠️The design of the measures for implementing the revised Electricity Act, which was adopted this year, falls far short of the targets set, as was published yesterday (see link in the comments). ⚠️ The reworked CO2 Act of March 2024 falls short, projecting only a 30-35% domestic reduction instead of the specified 70%. ⚠️ Experts note a lack of regulations for key sectors and measures to address high consumption levels. ⚠️ The rejection of the European Court of Human Rights ruling on the climate seniors' complaint further demonstrates that the state is not acknowledging inadequate protection against climate-related heatwaves. This means that Switzerland is missing out on the opportunity to tackle the challenges of climate change intelligently and courageously and to lead the way as a pioneer in shaping a climate-neutral future. #ClimateAction #SwissPolicy Schweizerische Energie-Stiftung SES Nathalie Moral Corinne Graessle Anna Alexandra Staubli Marco Schneider Maurin Rüegg Claudia P.
