Reflections on 2024: A Year of Significant Milestones in Asia-Pacific! 2024 has been an extraordinary year, filled with achievements that highlight the resilience, innovation, and collaboration of cooperatives across the region. As we prepare for the United Nations International Year of Cooperatives (#IYC2025), let’s celebrate the milestones that shaped this journey: ➡️ The historic ICA Global Cooperative Conference and General Assembly held in India, where Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi emphasized the vital role of cooperatives in fostering global cooperation. ➡️ The Ministers’ Conference in Jordan, strengthening government-cooperative partnerships. ➡️ The Asia-Pacific Women CEOs in Cooperatives Summit in Vietnam, showcasing women’s leadership. ➡️ The launch of ICA-EU FFPA Phase 2, focusing on sustainable, democratic, and inclusive development. ➡️ Enhanced collaboration across committees, impactful celebrations of international days, and robust discussions at Regional Board meetings. Our social media presence also grew significantly, reflecting increased visibility and engagement. With 110 members from 29 countries, these efforts continue to drive the cooperative movement forward. As we approach #IYC2025, we look forward to building on this momentum and creating a transformative year for cooperatives worldwide. Last week, our Research Committee organized #CoopColloquium 11 as part of its series of academic dialogues to discuss the findings of a multi-country study on “State of Partnerships between the State and Cooperatives" conducted as part of the ICA-EU Financial Framework Partnership Agreement Phase 2 (FFPA 2) or #Coops4dev🌏 project. Today, we celebrated our 64th Foundation Day! Did You Know? ICA Asia and Pacific is the first regional office of the International Cooperative Alliance, established in 1960. For more than six decades, we have proudly championed the cooperative movement, fostering growth, collaboration, and resilience across the region. As we reflect on our journey, we are reminded of the power of cooperation and the impact it has on communities. And, as we approach the 2025 International Year of Cooperatives, we reaffirm our commitment to showcasing how cooperatives are key to building a better world. Thank you to all our members and partners who have been part of this incredible journey! Our members spoke, and we listened! We're excited to announce this online training program on "Empowered Leadership, Thriving Cooperatives: Strengthening Governance for Better Tomorrow". Part of #coops4dev🌍, the training aims to enhance our members' capacities in cooperative governance. For session 1, we collaborate with Access Livelihoods, an AIM-NITI Aayog recognised, Established Incubation Center, primarily working on incubating women-owned producer enterprises across primary sectors to create equitable and lasting livelihood opportunities. My last journey in the Far East #coop visit was in Beijing! 📸 I met with the management and leadership of the All-China Federation of Supply and Marketing Cooperatives (ACFSMC). As a long-standing member of the International Cooperative Alliance, ACFSMC shows the world how smallholder farmer #cooperatives can come to a serious scale. ACFSMC represents 12% of national agri-food, it works in all the provinces of the country, has trading offices abroad, and also farm units abroad. It includes 191,000 cooperatives, and with close to 200 million (!) members, it is the largest coop in the world. With its core subsidiary, the China Co-op Group Co, the cooperative conglomerate offers a full-scale service from farm to fork, including on-farm high technology improvements, post-harvest management, cold chain logistics, finance, mutuals & insurance, wholesale, retail, e-commerce, and international trade. 📸 I visited the Xinfadi wholesale market (see the model in the picture), a fully-owned subsidiary of AFCSMC. Xinfadi trades every day 245,000 tonnes of agricultural products and is the second-largest wholesale market in the world. 💡 The benefits to farmers are substantial, with 60% of sales value, good profit sharing, and membership empowerment.
