We’re on a mission to make Pacific Islands Farmer Organisations more vibrant, viable and sustainable organisations.
About us
We’re on a mission to make Pacific Islands Farmer Organisations more vibrant, viable and sustainable organisations. Essential for effective engagement with farmers, Farmer Organisations are critical in empowering livelihoods for rural households across the Pacific Islands region. We have members in Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste, Cook Islands, New Caledonia, Hawai'i, Federated States of Micronesia, Marshall Islands, and Kiribati. A large proportion of the Pacific population lives in rural communities and grows their own food. When Pacific farms and farmers aren’t thriving, then rural communities and Pacific people suffer. The well-being of farmers and the sustainability of farms are therefore essential for Pacific people to live healthy and fulfilling lives. While the farmer organisation tradition is still relatively young in the Pacific, it has been clearly demonstrated that they have an important role to play in helping farmers access markets and improve livelihoods. Farmer organisations are best situated to understand the context and meet the needs of their farmer members. In addition, governments and development partners can extend the range of their rural services by working through farmer organisations, reaching more farmers with the information and training that they need.

MORDI Tonga Trust, in collaboration with #MDF #PacificRegional, recently conducted a comprehensive survey of vanilla farmers in #Tonga to understand farming and selling practices. The survey identified barriers farmers face, but also opportunities for market growth and higher incomes. Besides examining vanilla cultivation and commercial practices, the survey studied the cultivation of other key crops, the roles of men and women in vanilla farming – emphasising women’s #economicempowerment – and the effects of extreme weather events, especially those driven by #climatechange, on farming activities and livelihoods. You can view a summary of the survey analysis here: https://lnkd.in/gJvMX6y9 #VanillaInsights #ClimateResilience #MDFinPacific Palladium: Make It Possible Swisscontact

Special thanks to our Chief Guest, Mr. Candra Samekto, Country Director for the Pacific Island Countries International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), for sharing his insights on the importance of passing down knowledge to the younger generation. Mr. Samekto emphasized the need for annual celebrations of Fiji’s tropical fruits to ensure the industry thrives for generations to come. Executive Director of Pacific Farmer Organisations, Kyle Stice also highlighted the key challenges faced by farmers, including access to quality planting materials, proper agricultural information, and market opportunities. He stressed the importance of collaboration between nurseries, farmer organizations, the private sector, and the Ministry of Agriculture. A big thank you to Mr. Savenaca Cuquma, Principal Research Officer in Horticulture at the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, for discussing the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to support the growth of Fiji’s fruit tree industry. We are excited to share that the Pacific Farmer Organisations is collaborating with the research team from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, led by Dr. Subhashni Raj, Assistant Professor of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning. This important research initiative is focused on understanding how food flows were affected during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a specific emphasis on the role of local government policy in shaping food systems. The research team is conducting interviews with local organizations, including South Sea Orchids and Rise Beyond the Reef, to gain insights into the challenges faced by frontline communities—those with limited resources and networks—during climate-related disruptions. This initiative seeks to address these disparities by exploring the restoration and transformation of food systems, incorporating ancestral, traditional, and indigenous knowledge systems. As part of this research, we are surveying partners and community members, continuing to build on our COVID-19 response activities from the #PIRAS project. The findings will help inform evidence-based food systems policy and design in a rapidly changing climate, ensuring more sustainable and equitable solutions for the future. We are proud to support this vital work and look forward to the positive impact it will have on building resilient, adaptive food systems for Pacific communities. #FoodSecurity #ClimateResilience #SouthSeaOrchids #RiseBeyondTheReef #COVID19Response #PacificFarmersOrganisation #UniversityofHawaii
