Two years after receiving a life-changing kidney transplant at Mount Sinai, 9-year-old McKaylea returned to New York City to fulfill her Make-A-Wish dream—and “do all the things I couldn’t do when I was here for my transplant.” In addition, she wanted to meet the transplant surgeon who saved her life, Dr. Vikram Wadhera, and, importantly, share ice cream with him. During McKaylea's visit, she went to Noi Due Gelato on the Upper West Side with Dr. Wadhera and Rafael Khaim, DNP, Clinical Senior Operations Manager, Pediatric and Adult Renal Transplant. Rafael even surprised McKaylea with an American Girl Doll. McKaylea’s mother is incredibly grateful to Dr. Wadhera, and the “phenomenal” team who cared for McKaylea and supported the family. “From the receptionist to the nutritionist, so many kind and skilled professionals. They blew me out of the water,” she says. “All willing to answer any and all questions and address my concerns.” She has special praise for Rafael, who she says, “was on the jump from day one” and throughout McKaylea’s journey for a new kidney. Rafael is aware that that everyone on the team can make a lasting impact on patients. “We all have the potential to change the lives of those we care for, in and out of the hospital, and can shape experiences that will turn into cherished memories forever.” #WeFindAWay

In a busy office at the holidays, there's bound to be wait time. From our friends at Vroom, here's one of our favorite activities you can share with families to do while they wait in the exam room: Super-Silly Handshake Before stepping out of the room, try asking caregivers to make a super-secret special handshake with their child that only the two of them know. Suggest that they take turns adding new moves like a snap, a clap or a fist pump. As they add more, they can practice until they both have it down. Sharing moments like these helps children feel a special connection with their parents. Tips like these were developed as part of a three year collaboration on environmental transformation with the Bezos Family Foundation. To say that this has been the most difficult week of my life is an understatement. Just a few days ago I thought we had lost our son. Today sitting by his bedside in the hospital 🏥, for the first time, I am able to gather my thoughts and emotions to write about what no parent should experience. Our 15 yr old twin boy had an allergic reaction that rapidly progressed to anaphylactic shock last Friday evening as we were on the way to NYC for dinner. I thought those 15 minutes in the Lincoln Tunnel were the longest 15 minutes of my life, not knowing what was yet to come. We drove as fast as we could to Mount Sinai West Hospital- my previous home. I could not comprehend or believe as his condition deteriorated such that he needed mechanical ventilation. He was transferred by ambulance to Mount Sinai Kravis Children's Hospital and on route he went into cardiac arrest. He received CPR in the field as I sat helplessly in the front of the ambulance as we dashed across Central Park with sirens wailing. CPR continued as we moved him from the 🚑 to the PICU for a toal of about 40 minutes. Miraculously, he got his pulse and blood pressure back and we placed him on vvECMO (artificial lung support). During his CPR I told my wife he would not survive. With a blood acid (lacate level) as he did- the chances are near zero. Again- miraculously – he began to stabilize after about 36 hrs and we were able to separate him from life-support on the third day. As of Friday- he has almost fully recovered! We anticipate another several days for full recovery and expect to bring him home sometime this week. 🙏🙂 As I reflect on this – his survival needed about a thousand events to work perfectly- perfect CPR, perfect placement of the ECMO machine, perfect minute by minute management of every organ in his body. While I did not leave his bedside for five days – and was an active participant in his care with his magnificent medical team, so many things had to align for this remarkably successful outcome. And despite 40 minutes of CPR- his body does not have a bruise or a scratch! His survival is truely miraculous- each member of the team provided “perfect care”, we had access to the most sophisticated technology (that our subspeciality of thoracic surgery developed), and clearly a hand of the devine. It is impossible to thank in words our family, friends and colleagues for their outpouring of love and constant prayers in mosques, churches, synagogues and temples across the globe. Your visits, calls, messages, texts and prayers are what sustained us in the hours of our greatest adversity. We simply cannot be more grateful. With enormous thanks and gratitude. And with a new perspective on life and what really matters. #life #miracles #gratitude #higherpurpose #prayersanswered
