#DidYouKnow Why October marks the UK Black History Month? As Black History Month in the UK comes to a close, it is meaningful to reflect on why October was chosen for its celebration. In 1987, Ghanaian-born, Akyaaba Addai Sebo (the founder of Black History Month in the UK), selected October partly because it’s a month when African leaders historically gathered to resolve differences—a symbolic nod to reconnecting with African roots in the continent. Additionally, October follows the start of a new academic year in the UK, offering an ideal time to instill a sense of pride and identity in the Black children. This is in contrast to the United States where Black History Month is celebrated in February to honor the birthdays of former president Abraham Lincoln and abolitionist Frederick Douglass, both significant figures in the fight against slavery. #GBTA #DEI #Inclusion #Culture #GBTAInclusionandCulture #BlackHistoryMonth #BHM

In the UK, we celebrate Black History Month in October. This year's theme is "Reclaiming Narratives" which is dedicated to correcting false tales surrounding black history, black culture and black stereotypes. While it may be uncomfortable to learn about some parts of our past, it is necessary so that we avoid repeating it in the future. Black history is all of our history. We invite you to learn more at https://lnkd.in/exzxTSc.

We work together all year long as a committee and we were finally able to reconnect and even meet for the first time in some cases at #GBTA2024. Shouts out to Andrew Slaiby and Brittany M. Duhon for leading their education sessions on accessibility and ageism on behalf of the committee - job well done! Kudos to Linda Bekoe and Kimberly Johnson for being chosen as panelists for additional sessions. We planned, we ate, we laughed and we focused on how we can continue to be of service in the coming year. We’re so excited for you to see what’s next from your GBTA | Inclusion & Culture Committee! ☝🏽and oh…the snapper in the last photo was one of the BEST meals we had while in Atlanta. Be sure to pop into Apt 4B the next time you’re in the area! Support #minorityownedbusinesses 🍽️🤎🤍🖤

Today, we celebrate #Juneteenth across the U.S. This holiday has only been federally acknowledged and celebrated for the past three years so we understand that it may be new to some people. We broke it down here for you with a few highlights. Here are the quick facts: 🖤 America became an independent country on July 4, 1776 with the Declaration of Independence. ✋🏾 However, blacks were still enslaved. 🖤 On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation declaring that "all persons held as slaves...are and shall be free." This happened through the Thirteenth Amendment. 🖤 However, in confederate states, blacks were still enslaved until June 19, 1865. Around 2000 Union troops arrived in Galveston, TX to announce that more than 250,000 enslaved blacks in the state, were free by executive decree. 🖤 And we now recognize this day as #Juneteenth. Happy Juneteenth, Y'all! To be further enlightened, check out the history and legacy from the Smithsonian below. https://lnkd.in/gqvPZFF
