"This month is just for LGBT+ disabled people right?" "I think you should change the name of Disability Pride Month because it's confusing. Pride is just for the LGBT community" "What's the point of Disability Pride Month?" I've been asked and told the above multiple times when it comes to Disability Pride Month. The second point, me changing the name as if it's something I came up with all by myself is a particular favourite. (I wasn't even one when Disability Pride Month began) For those who don't know, June is LGBT Pride Month and July is Disability Pride Month. Disability Pride has its routes in the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in July 1990 and emerged as a way for our community to celebrate their identities and break down the innumerable barriers we face. Of course, there's a lot of intersectionality when it comes to transitioning from June to July. (According to the University of Cambridge autistic people are 8 times more likely to be LGBT+) but this is a month that celebrates the disabled community as a whole. But unlike June, no corporates will be rainbow washing their logos, no huge events will take place, and there won't be the focus on disabled people in the media. In fact, unless you're following disabled creators you'll have no idea it's a thing. So if you can, take this month to educate yourself, attend a few webinars or follow some fantastic disabled people. #DisabilityPrideMonth #DisabledAndProud

I am often asked for advice on how to “sell” accessible and inclusive garden design in public and private spaces. I can see these people hope for a impenetrable list of justifications and benefits they can pass on to get projects greenlit. My advice is always to turn the tables and simply ask for a justification why these spaces shouldn’t be universally designed and inclusive for all. It’s often met with a bit of shock to be honest. Because we just don’t think reflexively enough about the idea that access and inclusion (I believe these things are different too btw) is a basic human right. So I loved seeing this as it re-affirms my position within greenspace design. AND this approach applies to all disadvantaged groups too. Not just within disability. #greenspace #landscapedesign #therapeutichorticulture #inclusion #disability #disabilityrights
