Here’s a bit about the Micronesia Challenge from GLISPA, and an impactful visual. ‘Micro’ may be in the name, but this a big initiative over a BIG area… “The Micronesia Challenge stands as a beacon of environmental stewardship and conservation. A groundbreaking commitment by the Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, the Marshall Islands, Guam, and the Northern Marianas Islands, this collaborative initiative strives to safeguard the region's unparalleled biodiversity and ecological integrity. The Micronesia Challenge was initiated in 2006 with the aim of conserving a minimum of 30% of nearshore marine resources and 20% of terrestrial resources in the vast expanse of islands. Covering an area of over 2.5 million square miles, this initiative is dedicated to preserving the natural beauty and heritage of the region.” #islandconservation #pacificislands #micronesia

The third day of our HES LinkedIn campaign is #WorldEnvironmentDay and we want to highlight our team of biologists and ecologists that has extensive experience advising clients on ecological design and NbS opportunities and other ecological matters. 💚 As we face the challenges of climate change and the rapid evolution of offshore energy, it is essential to develop sustainable solutions that protect marine biodiversity and coastal communities. 🐠 Recently, we completed a study for STINAPA Bonaire on sediment dynamics in Lac Bay, Bonaire. This report is part of the larger Resilience, Sustainable Energy and Marine Biodiversity Program RESEMBID.  🌊 We provided recommendations for managing and restoring mangrove areas, seagrass patches, and overall sediment dynamics. Our focus was on creating solutions supported by the bay’s various stakeholders while preserving the natural ecological balance. 🌟Our Living Lab Norway's Kelp Forest Restoration has been featured as an EU Mission Adaptation Story! Our partners Wenting Chen and Andreas Tuerk have written a wonderful text summarizing the threats kelp forests are facing, how 'blue forest' restoration yields benefits, the funding barriers and enabling factors to large scale restoration activities, and how Invest4Nature tackles these challenges. 🗝️Key Learnings: • 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀: Conservation and restoration of blue forest habitats bring many important benefits related to ecosystem services to local communities. These benefits can have very high economic and non-economic value. • 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻-𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴: Decision-makers must consider the direct economic benefits that can be realised in the short term and the multiple benefits from ecosystem conservation and restoration in the long run. • 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀: It is important to increase the private sector's and financial institutions' involvement in coastal and marine ecosystem conservation and restoration activities. Suitable business models and financing mechanisms must be identified to upscale blue forest conservation and restoration according to local contexts. • 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀: Engaging with local stakeholders who interact with the ecosystem is crucial to garner support for conservation and restoration efforts and to safeguard the wellbeing of local coastal communities. The latest report by the European Forest Institute (EFI) highlights the critical role EU forests play as long-term carbon sinks, contributing significantly to the EU’s emission reduction targets for 2050. In particular, reforestation and improved forest management in Southern Europe are identified as some of the most effective strategies for carbon sequestration, biodiversity enhancement, and ecosystem resilience. Despite their ecological, social, and economic value, almost two-thirds of marine protect areas around the world lack sufficient funding for effective management. The new 𝗠𝗣𝗔 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹𝗸𝗶𝘁 is a first-stop resource for marine managers and practitioners interested in generating sustainable financing for their #MPA. This #toolkit provides an introduction to MPA finance and an overview of a wide variety of finance mechanisms for MPAs, along with guidance on prioritizing and implementing finance mechanisms. Very excited to see this important resource from the Reef Resilience Network! The new MPA Finance Toolkit is a first-stop resource for marine managers and practitioners interested in generating sustainable financing for their MPAs. The online toolkit features six videos, an extensive glossary of potential finance mechanisms (including grant-based, compensation-based, investment-based, and ecosystem value-based mechanisms), and the Blue Nature Alliance’s 3-step methodology for identifying and prioritizing MPA financing opportunities. Managers using this toolkit will come away not only with a broad understanding of this emerging and rapidly growing field, but also with guidance on how to generate high-level roadmaps for potential finance mechanisms for their MPAs.
