The third day of our HES LinkedIn campaign is #WorldEnvironmentDay and we want to highlight our team of biologists and ecologists that has extensive experience advising clients on ecological design and NbS opportunities and other ecological matters. 💚 As we face the challenges of climate change and the rapid evolution of offshore energy, it is essential to develop sustainable solutions that protect marine biodiversity and coastal communities. 🐠 Recently, we completed a study for STINAPA Bonaire on sediment dynamics in Lac Bay, Bonaire. This report is part of the larger Resilience, Sustainable Energy and Marine Biodiversity Program RESEMBID.  🌊 We provided recommendations for managing and restoring mangrove areas, seagrass patches, and overall sediment dynamics. Our focus was on creating solutions supported by the bay’s various stakeholders while preserving the natural ecological balance. Ecological restoration has gained increasing importance in global and national treaties, UN coalitions, and conventions. The Biodiversity Strategy 2030 program and the Convention to Combat Desertification provide vital support for promoting large-scale ecological restoration. Here are some of the charming puffins that inhabit the island of Craigleith in the Firth of Forth that are the focal point of my ongoing research efforts. I'm spearheading a project with the #ScottishSeabirdCentre, generously funded by #NatureScot's Scottish Marine Environmental Enhancement Fund (SMEEF) - our main objective is to enhance the habitat on Craigleith through the implementation of effective strategies aimed at controlling the spread of nettles. By doing so, we aim to create a more hospitable environment for these unique seabirds, ensuring their long-term sustainability and preservation. Through meticulous observation and data collection, we will be able to pinpoint the areas most affected by nettles and tailor our intervention strategies accordingly. This collaborative effort not only benefits the puffin population but also contributes to the overall biodiversity and ecological balance of the island. The success of this project will serve as a testament to the positive impact that targeted conservation efforts can have on coastal ecosystems.

The Red Sea is a jewel of biodiversity, home to over 1,200 species of fish and some of the world's most resilient #CoralReefs. Yet, the pressure of rapid economic development threatens its unique marine ecosystems.🌊 How can we balance conservation with growth to ensure #SustainableDevelopment for this region? Our recent article outlines a comprehensive framework comprising seven key pillars to integrate economic development with conservation efforts. From marine spatial planning and sustainable infrastructure to innovative financing mechanisms and robust enforcement strategies, these initiatives aim to protect the #RedSea its rich natural heritage while supporting local economies.📍 The Red Sea's coral reefs alone contribute approximately $160 billion annually to the global economy. ⭐New Guidelines Launched! 📘Guidelines for the Restoration, Creation & Management of Salt Marshes and Tidal Flats 📅Last week, Wetlands International hosted a successful webinar for the global launch of the Guidelines for the Restoration, Creation & Management of Salt Marshes and Tidal Flats. 🌱The guidelines are scientifically rigorous and practically applicable, supporting practitioners and decision-makers to effectively plan, design, implement and evaluate restoration projects, using best practices. With the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration well underway, one message is taking center stage – we need to restore biodiversity on our planet. A new study, led by researchers in the Faculty of Environment, has uncovered details on Canada’s ecological restoration practices. By synthesizing insights from 50 years of Canadian academic research, they identified which ecosystems are being studied, and where. Canada is an established global leader in ecological restoration, having developed the first national principles and guidelines for ecological restoration and the first international guidance for the World Commission on Protected Areas. However, much restoration happens in silos and little is known about the collective ecological restoration practices across Canada.

🌿 **Nature Restoration: Interinstitutional Agreement Adopted by the EU Council** 🌿 The EU Council formally adopted the Nature Restoration Regulation on June 17, despite numerous blockages in recent months. **Regulation objectives:** - **By 2030:** Restore at least 20% of the EU's land and marine areas. - **By 2050:** Restore all ecosystems requiring restoration. **Key measures:** - **Farmers:** Establishment of hedges, ponds, and fallow areas in "high-diversity" zones. - **Peatlands:** Implementation of measures to restore drained peatlands. - **Trees:** Contribution to the planting of at least three billion additional trees by 2030 at the EU level. **Next steps:** - **Publication:** The text will be published in the Official Journal of the EU. - **Entry into force:** 20 days after its publication.
