Ahead of the general election on 4 July, we published a #CalltoAction document, Trees for People, Place and Nature: Growing Trees for Tomorrow's needs, setting out four key areas for government to recognise and act on. We are calling for the next government to commit to working with the forestry profession to unlock the potential of our trees, woods and forests, in support of delivering against the timber, biodiversity, and climate crises. There are more living things, both large and microsopically small, present in any patch of forest than you could count 🍄 The greater the variety and number of plant, fungi, microbe and animal species in an area (i.e. the more biodiverse an area is) the healthier an area's ecosystem is considered to be. Biodiversity is vital to our lives, too. It provides us with clean air, water and food. But, we are losing biodiversity at an alarming rate. Forest-dwelling wildlife populations have declined by over 50% since 1970 📉Habitat loss is the greatest threat, as more and more land is cleared for other uses. Responsible forestry is a fundamental tool to tackle biodiversity loss. 🆕 A new poll reveals that 84% of Europeans across seven countries want to see the EU Deforestation Regulation #EUDR fully implemented by its scheduled start date of December 30, 2024. With 73% urging lawmakers to prioritise enforcement, it’s clear that people want bold action to protect our forests! The Regulation, aimed at banning the sale of goods that have contributed to #deforestation is currently at risk of being delayed as the European Commission bowed to agricultural and forestry industry lobbyists and proposed a 12-month delay. A year’s delay will have a catastrophic impact on climate, forests and the people and wildlife that depend on them. 📢 The EU must listen to the overwhelming public demand and take urgent action to safeguard our hashtag #forests and the planet! 🔗 Read our press release: https://lnkd.in/ePTzVt7H Thea Parson Carole Mitchell Glenn Hurowitz Jordan McDonald João Gonçalves Boris Patentreger Gemma Hoskins Alex Wijeratna Amanda Hurowitz Katie Y. We all know what needs to be done for transformational change—use less fossil fuel, conserve biodiversity, and manage water resources better. But why aren't we taking action? Robert Nasi, CIFOR-ICRAF Chief Operating Officer, explores the barriers to change and discusses how forestry, trees, and agroforestry offer solutions to climate change, biodiversity loss, and desertification. 🔗: https://lnkd.in/dVwFG5CC #Trees4Resilience #COP29

The World Economic Forum estimates that more than half of global GDP (about $44 trillion) is moderately or highly dependent on the natural world. Agriculture, forestry and fisheries all rely on natural systems such as pollination, water purification, soil fertility and climate regulation. Protecting the Earth’s biodiversity isn’t just good practice, it’s essential. Join us as we explore a wide range of issues related to biodiversity and some of the science-based solutions that can be used to deliver sustainable infrastructure. 🌳 Funding opportunity: ‘Space for Sustainable Forestry’. We invite proposals for Demonstration Projects that use space in services to aid protection of the world’s forests. Forests cover around 31% of the Earth's land area and host 80% of terrestrial biodiversity, providing essential ecosystem services such as regulating rainfall, protecting water sources, and preventing flooding and soil erosion, yet 10 million hectares of forest are lost annually to threats including deforestation, habitat fragmentation, and climate change. This new call for proposals is the first initiative of our Task Force on Space for Bioeconomy. Members of the Task Force have provided use cases for the call. Find use case examples and full application criteria ➡️ https://lnkd.in/euBpB6DQ 📌 Kindly note that teams must obtain a Letter of Authorisation from their respective National Delegation before submitting a Full Proposal. Follow the link above for full details.

This work here provides a practical example of section E of the GBF which recognises urgent policy action is required to achieve sustainable development so that the drivers of undesirable change that have exacerbated biodiversity loss will be reduced and/or reversed to allow for the recovery of all ecosystems and to achieve the Convention’s Vision of living in harmony with nature by 2050. #GBFTarget15

Timber and pulp companies – they are key players in the future of tropical forests 🌳 The timber and pulp companies assessed on SPOTT manage over 53 million hectares of tropical forest landscapes, nearly the size of France. These forests are not only reservoirs of biodiversity but also home to numerous local communities whose livelihoods depend on the health of these ecosystems. The actions of these companies can profoundly influence both biodiversity and human lives. In our latest blog, our timber and pulp assessment lead Samuel Ross explores how these companies perform in terms of transparency. From deforestation challenges to community rights, Sam outlines the key issues in the tropical forestry sector and the pressing need for greater accountability.
