🌍 Happy World Migratory Bird Day! 🌍 Today, the 𝗪𝗲𝘁𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝟰𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 joins the global celebration of the incredible journeys that migratory birds undertake each year. Our four pilot sites are home to many of these birds, and we are excited to share this video showcasing some of these beautiful creatures. 🦅 This year's theme highlights 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 and how they are a crucial part of many birds' diets. Insects, from caterpillars to dragonflies, provide essential nutrients for migratory birds, supporting their long and demanding journeys. Protecting wetlands means protecting these birds and their food sources! 🐞 Join us in 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝘀, and let’s continue to safeguard our ecosystems for future generations. 💪 Wetland4Change project partners : University of Forestry, Sofia (LP), @Greek Biotope-Wetland Centre (EKBY), Universitat de València, MEDSEA / Mediterranean Sea and Coast foundation, Tour du Valat, ETC-UMA #WorldMigratoryBirdDay #WetlandConservation #Wetlands #Conservation #Environment #ProtectOurPlanet #Ecosystem #Nature #Interreg #Mediterranean #EU

We should #ActNow to do the following nature based solutions (NbS) to fight climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution (triple planetary crisis). 1. Rating and ranking of the top plant species of the world, on the basis of their capacity to provide food to the animal biodiversity as well as on the basis of their capacity to reduce greenhouse gases and pollution from the atmosphere, inducing rainfall and reducing atmospheric temperature. 2. Design the best plant portfolio (plant community or plant assemblage) for agriculture and forestry for maximising the synergistic effect of plant biodiversity. 3. Design the best landscape for forestry and agriculture, for maximising the ecosystem level biodiversity and maximising the edge effect on biodiversity.

As #WorldRainforestDay is fast approaching, we reflect on our efforts to take care of rainforests worldwide 🌍🌳 When we nurture all forests, we tackle the worst effects of climate change and prevent biodiversity loss, a task that we have been committed to for the past 30 years. Our efforts towards responsible forestry have not been in vain, and have translated into successful biodiversity preservation stories: 🐆 Mayan Biosphere Reserve of Guatemala – There are up to 11.28 jaguars per 100 km²: the highest reported values of the species in the country. 🌿 Madre de Dios reserve in Perú - There are 135 registered species in the FSC-certified area, including 17 key species tracked for their importance to this ecosystem. 🐘 Congo Basin – FSC-certified concessions harbor 2.7 times more large mammals than non-certified areas. The time is now: 2024 is the year of action. Join us and @worldrainforestday in our mission to preserve the rainforests, and all the biodiversity that depend on them. Did you know, that today is the International Day for Biodiversity! 💚 🌱 Biodiversity is instrumental to maintaining healthy forest growth and ensuring the vitality of our business. That is why we at UPM are committed to climate-positive forestry and promoting biodiversity in all our operations. Our biodiversity actions are divided into three categories: 🌲 forest management ✋ conservation 🤝 projects and collaboration In each category, progress is monitored through carefully selected biodiversity indicators. You can find the indicators and follow the journey on ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dfCT-n-8 #upm #upmtimber #biodiversity

Fires are a critical disturbance event in the adaptive cycle of savanna ecosystems, maintaining healthy ecosystem functioning and foresting high biological diversity. However, since European colonization, fire suppression and prevention operations have dominated in land, forestry, and conservation management, based on the understanding that savannas are degraded forests and have destructive impacts on the ecosystem. This has resulted in widespread ecological degradation, biodiversity loss, and increasing greenhouse gas emissions. 🔥🌱 Join us on July 2nd, when our speaker Abigail Croker, a researcher at the Centre for Environmental Policy, Imperial College London, explores alternative fire management strategies across African semi-arid and mesic savannas, particularly protected area landscapes. Aiming to include participants from different time zones, we will offer two sessions of the Restoration Community Talk: ⭐️ Register here for the session at 9 am CEST: https://lnkd.in/dFe2G5Xr ⭐️ Register here for the session at 5 pm CEST: https://lnkd.in/d8GHrBx7 If you can’t attend yourself, feel free to forward these links to any restoration- and conservation-related contact that might be interested. We look forward to welcoming you for lively discussions! 🙌🏾 #restoration #conservation #community #ecosystem

March 21 coincides with the beginning of the vernal equinox and the first day of spring. This day was declared World Forestry Day to bring people closer to the forest, which covers 25% of the Earth's surface, to pique their interest in learning more about its functions, as well as the need for its protection, which is vital for human survival. Especially in our times, with negative developments in environmental issues such as climate change, the greenhouse effect, land desertification, threats to biodiversity, and extensive deforestation of tropical forests. In Greece, forests are at the mercy of natural disasters, encroachment, and uncontrolled exploitation of their resources. Fifteen percent of the country's forest wealth is destroyed every year due to various reasons, with only 10% being replanted. The few and aging forest rangers, inadequate state funding, outdated equipment, and 2,500 unappointed specialist scientists constitute the forestry problem in our country.
