How often do you think about "work context" when looking for a new job? Will you be mostly sitting or standing, interacting or working alone, talking on the phone or emailing? Consider the work context of a typical computer programmer: Electronic Mail — 100% responded “Every day.” Spend Time Sitting — 90% responded “Continually or almost continually.” Contact With Others — 66% responded “Constant contact with others.” Structured versus Unstructured Work — 31% responded “Some freedom.” A number of job descriptions on the massive jobs database, ONetonline.org, have a "Work Context" section to help you picture yourself in a new job before you jump in.

How do you search for jobs on the boards, Which criteria do you use? Scrolling through thousands of job postings is not only boring but impractical. Being the tech I am I'm trying to optimise my search but it seems the search engine designers treat the user criteria as "optional" vs. their algorithms. My examples... On LinkedIn for my daily checks I put in my area, "Posted in the last 24 hours", and "Salary over XXX" and I get back 534 results, many with salaries under XXX or out of my area. Still, it ignores a few jobs I saw on browsing that were in my salary range.  I changed my search to "Posted in the last 24 hours and Experience level "Mid-Senior Level" and Director and got a bunch of 1st line technician postings. CWJobs and Total jobs ignore the "Posted in the last 24 hours" and location completely in favour "Featured" posts. For the last 10 days, my search and sorts have put up an ICT manager in Maidstone, Kent with no remote options. CV-Library is 68% (I counted) of Training programmes that are neither near me, posted in the last 24 hours nor in the salary range. I can't sensibly put in the job title or skill because they are so broad, which means browsing is the only way to go, but how do you bring that browsing number down to something sensible but still meaningful to your job hunt? ----- I am looking for a permanent role in IT Management or Contract roles as IT Manager/Hands-On/Tech Lead.
