Saturday the 21st marks the winter solstice, the shortest day and longest night of the year, observed in cultures around the world in various ways, from Yule to the Dongzhi Festival. In the Western world of work, while we’re all distracted by the holiday season and wrapping up our end-of-year projects, the solstice is a quiet reminder that we also need to take time to pause, reflect, and embrace change. In the world of HR I live in as a Managing Partner at MS Capital, the solstice inspires me to think of meaningful ways to support people as we transition through the season and into the new year. For one, it’s essential to remind employees to prioritize self-care. Whether it’s using remaining PTO, engaging in wellness activities, or simply taking time to disconnect, fostering a culture that values rest ironically benefits everyone in the long run. After all, burned-out employees are not effective employees. The solstice also invites us to reflect on what we’ve accomplished. Use this time to express gratitude to your team for their hard work and resilience throughout the year. And just as the days now begin to grow longer, this is a symbolic time to look ahead. Start conversations about professional development goals and set the stage for meaningful growth in the new year. As we lean into the light of the coming days, let’s embrace this season as an opportunity to recharge, reconnect, and realign our purpose.

🌍 As workplaces grow more diverse and global, it’s important to recognize the traditions, beliefs, and celebrations that might not align with our own experiences. Around the world, countless holidays and observances are deeply rooted in meaningful histories, cultures, and geographies. That’s why we’re thrilled to introduce Feminuity’s 2025 Global Holidays, Observances, and Celebrations Calendar! This calendar highlights hundreds of important dates, complete with thoughtful details about each occasion. It’s designed to help your team deepen understanding, foster empathy, and build cultural awareness. While it’s not always feasible to recognize every occasion listed, the dates your organization chooses to acknowledge—whether through time off, budget allocation, or programming—can reflect the communities and values most supported. Use this calendar as a conversation starter with your team and implement the practices that align with your unique workplace culture. ✨ Download your copy today! https://lnkd.in/gKWYJEXY

The holidays are a time for celebration, connection, and community—but not all holidays are celebrated equally. As a company, it’s important to be mindful of the various cultures, beliefs, and traditions that make up your team, ensuring that year-end celebrations are inclusive and reflect your diversity. Here are a few ideas to ensure that all employees feel valued and celebrated during the holiday season: 1. Host Culturally Inclusive Events: Acknowledge holidays beyond Christmas—Diwali, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Lunar New Year, and more. Incorporate a variety of traditions into your celebrations. 2. Offer Flexible Time Off: Ensure that your employees can take time off for holidays important to them, whether that’s celebrating with family or honoring cultural practices. 3. Share Educational Content: Use your internal communications channels to share stories, facts, and traditions associated with different cultural holidays. This helps employees learn more about each other and fosters a deeper sense of inclusion. Let us know, how do you make sure your office celebrations are inclusive? #InclusiveHolidays #CulturalCelebrations #DiversityMatters #Holidays #OfficeParty #DEI #TheCultureCoach

Volunteer Alberta works to nourish wellbeing and healthy communities of belonging by cultivating conditions for volunteering and civic engagement. We believe that one of those conditions is for people to have the time and energy to engage in their communities meaningfully. In 2023, we continued the Flowing Fridays experiment from 2022 to encourage healthy workplace practices and culture. The experiment explored the question: “What if Volunteer Alberta created time and space for people on our team to experience wellbeing and connections in ways that were meaningful for them?” We are excited to share our second Flowing Fridays (Un)learning Brief that reports and reflects on our experimentation with a four-day work week. It builds on the first brief by summarizing what we found in our initial exploration of the connection between rest and well-being. We also share our (un)learnings, findings, design methodologies, and grounding principles that guided our journey. We hope that briefs like this might encourage organizations and individuals to explore what wellbeing and inclusive workplaces can look like in the sector. ➡️Read Flowing Fridays (Un)learning Brief #2: https://ow.ly/YLYz50SBWnR ➡️Read Flowing Fridays (Un)learning Brief #1: https://ow.ly/F3ui50SBWnQ

In the spirit of workplace cultural and #psychologicalhealthandsafety, it’s important to be mindful of how holiday traditions like Secret Santa, monetary contributions, and office Christmas decoration competitions can impact all employees. For diasporan staff, who often support families both here and back home, even a small request—like contributing $10—can add stress. They may feel compelled to contribute out of conformity or fear of being misunderstood or shamed. Before organizing office holiday activities, such as decoration competitions, consider those who may not celebrate Christmas or those for whom such traditions could be culturally unsafe. To ensure inclusivity and fairness, focus on connection-building activities that don’t require financial contributions or impose specific cultural norms. While celebrating diversity is important, it’s equally crucial to center inclusion in everything we do and avoid imposing dominant traditions and values on everyone. How do you cultivate equity, inclusion and belonging in your workplace? Do you say “Merry Christmas” to everyone, making it awkward for those who don’t celebrate, or do you say “Happy Holidays” and respect the diversity of your colleagues? Let’s celebrate the holidays in ways that foster #culturalpluralism joy, unity, and #culturalsafety, without placing undue financial or emotional burdens on anyone.
