Saturday marks the winter solstice, the shortest day and longest night of the year, observed in cultures around the world in various ways, from Yule to the Dongzhi Festival. In the Western world of work, while we’re all distracted by the holiday season and wrapping up our end-of-year projects, the solstice is a quiet reminder that we also need to take time to pause, reflect, and embrace change. In the world of HR I live in as a President and CEO at Gables Search Group, the solstice inspires me to think of meaningful ways to support people as we transition through the season and into the new year. For one, it’s essential to remind employees to prioritize self-care. Whether it’s using remaining PTO, engaging in wellness activities, or simply taking time to disconnect, fostering a culture that values rest ironically benefits everyone in the long run. After all, burned-out employees are not effective employees. The solstice also invites us to reflect on what we’ve accomplished. Use this time to express gratitude to your team for their hard work and resilience throughout the year. And just as the days now begin to grow longer, this is a symbolic time to look ahead. Start conversations about professional development goals and set the stage for meaningful growth in the new year. As we lean into the light of the coming days, let’s embrace this season as an opportunity to recharge, reconnect, and realign our purpose.

Last week, I announced iTValuations first Global Week of Rest-January 13-17, 2025. We believe rest is a vital investment—not just for our team, but for the quality of service we provide. Although it might not be possible for every organization to take a full week off, there are creative ways to integrate rest into your operations: 💡 Split your team into groups, allowing each to take time off while maintaining client support. 🔋 Offer long weekends to recharge, giving Mondays and Fridays off. 📽️ Introduce a Passion Project Day to help your team explore personal interests. 💲 To support this movement, we’re offering one month of free service for MSPs who implement any rest initiative inspired by this campaign. Together, we can lead the way in balancing excellence with sustainability. ❄️ Something unusual happens in construction in December! ❄️ With the Christmas break in sight, the temptation creeps in to kick important things down the line to January. 🗓️ Important things like recruitment! 👷♂️👷♀️ We don't delay these things at any other point in the year, and inevitably the effect is we return in January in something of a mild panic with a much larger to-do list than necessary. 📋 It's human nature, I suppose. We see the Christmas break as something of a 'finish line' to get over. Except we're running the same race in January! We lose valuable time in December that could be put to good use. So what can we do about it? Well with our input we can; 🔥 Look ahead to next year's programme of works. Where could the peaks & troughs exist? 🔥 Take a strategic overview of your business across each department - where could you be stretched, where can you strengthen? 🔥 Put together succession plans/talent & skills development - knowledge transfer often takes longer than we expect. 🔥 Review staff rewards & retention strategies. With a more thorough understanding of your business we can use the weeks available to us in December to lay some of the groundwork and start the new year well prepared. 💬 What steps are you taking this December to ensure a smoother start to the new year?
