Fueled by a burning curiosity and eagerness to learn, Amy Clutterbuck, our Sustainability Associate, embarked on her journey into sustainability after graduating in geography and environmental change.
She joined CPW in 2020 and has since become a key player within the sustainability team. Continuously building on her knowledge and expertise in areas such as BREEAM and her new role as an NHS Net Zero Coordinator, Amy drives sustainability across multiple projects. For her, this work isn’t just a job - it’s her passion.
As part of our ongoing series highlighting the exceptional talent at CPW and exploring our healthcare projects, we caught up with Amy for a quick Q&A session:

To put it simply, it’s about ensuring compliance with the NHS #NetZero Building Standard. I collaborate with design teams to integrate sustainability from the start, aligning projects with stringent benchmarks on embodied and operational carbon. For instance, I’ve worked on the Longton Integrated Care Hub and Leek Moorlands Hospital, ensuring they meet the NHS’s ambitious #decarbonisation targets.

It’s incredibly beneficial because it allows for long-term planning. Healthcare estates can stagger their investments in fabric and infrastructure upgrades, making it more manageable financially. Early engagement is key – the sooner sustainability goals are embedded into design, the better chance you have of meeting those tough carbon targets, particularly with older NHS buildings.

We’re seeing a shift towards lower embodied carbon and lower operational energy in new builds, but the real challenge is with refurbishing older, gas-reliant estates. It’s a balancing act – reducing operational energy while maintaining the integrity of these older structures. The ultimate goal is to align with a decarbonised grid, but retrofitting and iterative design are going to be crucial moving forward.
Stay tuned for additional insights from Amy, as well as more team spotlights coming soon!
