Back in September, we had the pleasure of being sponsor of the month for Wasteshark Leeds, celebrating its official launch just a few months earlier in July. 🦈 So, how’s the little guy been doing since then? Let’s dive into the stats... During our sponsor month, WasteShark covered an impressive 4.59 kilometres and scooped up a whopping 768 litres of mixed waste (both man-made and natural) - that’s a huge amount for one little drone! Since it first entered Leeds' waterways, the bot has travelled 19.44 kilometres and removed an incredible 2,136 litres of waste. 👏 While we recognise that there's still a lot of work to do when it comes to changing behaviours and caring for our environment, it's projects like these that really drive forward the power of innovation and collaboration. They’re a reminder of how technology can actively support and sustain our natural world. 🌎 As WasteShark Leeds continues its journey, we can’t wait to see even more initiatives like this emerge as we head into 2025! A big thank-you to the organisations behind this amazing project: Yorkshire Design Group | Canal Connections CIC | Wasteshark Leeds | RanMarine Technology #CollaborateForChange #TechForGood #WasteShark #DroneTechnology #SustainableInnovation #Leeds #WasteManagement #EnvironmentMatters #PlasticPollution #WeAreCPW
About us
Climate change is without a doubt the greatest challenge we face in these times. When it comes to cutting carbon, current commercial building standards don’t go far enough. As it stands around 40-percent of energy-related greenhouse emissions come from buildings. We believe we can change that. Sustainability is part of our DNA. We are on a mission to build Zero-Carbon buildings that can sustain better lives for many generations. We are striving to raise the global standards of our industry whilst building better spaces and places for the world. Founded in 1978, CPW’s philosophy is one of innovation, creativity and technical expertise. Our experience as an industry leading mechanical, electrical and low carbon consultancy has ensured people and businesses realise their vision. With many offices in important locations around the country and over 230 world-leading experts offering a wide range of services, we deliver exemplary engineering solutions to national and international clients across a broad range of sectors. Let’s work together to bring buildings to life, minimising their impact on the world, whilst maximising the sense of enjoyment that people get from them. CPW - Where buildings come alive.

“The support for retrofitting in the budget is vital, particularly in the context of the growing push to upgrade existing building stock to meet stricter environmental regulations. "However, I strongly believe more investment in this area is necessary given the current state of many of our buildings in the UK. Serious commitment and investment are needed to upgrade building fabric before we can even consider tackling greener energy sources," shares Hannah Kissick, our Innovation and Decarbonisation Lead. With the 2024 Budget announced earlier this autumn, the UK has signalled steps toward sustainable development, NHS improvements, and addressing the housing crisis. While these initiatives are welcome, as Hannah points out, the state of much of our building stock highlights the need for greater commitment and funding to drive real progress. We asked four of our specialists to share their views on what this means for the built environment: stay tuned for the full news piece! 📰 #GovernmentFunding #Sustainability #BuildingSector #WeAreCPW

The Onyx Ward Low-Secure Autism Unit is a purpose-built inpatient facility designed to meet Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust’s goal of eliminating dormitories and providing patients with their own private space. The unit features seven self-contained, single-person flats, including one that is fully accessible. Our engineers and consultants, collaborated with the project team to create a studio-style accommodation facility, incorporating open communal spaces, a garden, and private outdoor areas connected to each bedroom. Recognising the sensory challenges often faced by autistic patients, the design prioritises reducing overstimulation. Each flat is equipped with personalised lighting and temperature controls, enabling residents to adapt their environment to suit their needs. To ensure the facility was truly fit for purpose, the hospital liaised with the neurodivergent community, gathering valuable insights to inform the design and create a calming, user-centric space. As part of Bradford College’s ambitious estates strategy, we’ve been involved in the installation of a brand-new substation, ensuring the college is future-proofed to meet its growing electrical demands. This particular project is critical in supporting the wider redevelopment efforts, including the refurbishment of the Advanced Technology Centre, and is part of the College's commitment to regional economic growth. Collaborating with J Richardson Electrical, we’ve helped lay the groundwork for sustainable and reliable energy across multiple buildings on campus. 🧬🔬 🙌 Last night our plans for the new #Aspen Building, to be built at our Wood Centre For Innovation, were resolved to be approved by Oxford City Council’s planning committee to provide #science and #tech companies with additional #startup and grow-on #laboratory and #office space! 🏢 Designed in response to the increased demand for mid-sized grow-on laboratory space in Oxford, particularly within the globally significant #HeadingtonScienceCluster, the circa 17,000 sq ft (1,600 sq m) building will deliver a mix of flexible CL II level laboratory and office space spread over two floors, to service growing #lifescience and #deeptech companies. 🎒In addition, the building will include a new STEM resources and preparation room, which will enable us to support the increase in demand for our Science Oxford outreach delivery to #schools and engage local communities with #STEM. Stephen Burgess, CEO: “We are thrilled that our planning application has been given the green light. The Aspen Building will create exceptional spaces for exceptional science. “The new facility represents a significant investment for the Trust and underlines our continued commitment to the Headington Science Cluster. It will mean we will be able to support further #scientific #research, create local #jobs, and contribute to #Oxfordshire’s impressive #innovation ecosystem. It will also allow us to expand the impact of our Science Oxford education programme to inspire even more young people about STEM.” 🙏 Our huge thanks to the team ADP Architecture Carter Jonas BSG Ecology LANDSHAPE, Glanville Consultants Ltd, Gleeds, Sylva Trees and CPW. “The biggest issue we find in the NHS is firefighting. A lack of funding has completely understandably led having to deal with immediate backlog maintenance issues, without stepping back to see the bigger picture (e.g. NHS decarbonisation by 2040). "We see buildings that are not fit for purpose, unable to provide adequate bed space or services, while administration areas are underutilised following work from home trends post-pandemic – we have been addressing these at multiple hospitals across the UK with recent success at Queens Square University College London Hospitals. We see patients unable to easily access care in their local area – as we have tried to tackle this with the introduction of Community Diagnostic Centres," explains Steve Umbers, our Director and Healthcare specialist at CPW. The UK government’s 2024 budget, announced in October, has set the tone for addressing key national priorities, including supporting the #NHS, building better schools, and tackling the housing crisis. With the built environment sector still navigating Brexit’s impact, the pandemic’s aftermath, and global supply chain challenges, this funding presents both opportunities and questions about its reach and effectiveness. For the built environment, this is a critical moment to tackle major issues within UK building stock - but will the investment truly go far enough? We asked four of our specialists at CPW to share their perspectives: stay tuned for the full news piece! 📰 What do you think? Will this funding deliver meaningful change? In partnership with the Football Foundation, we teamed up with the University of Leeds to help transform local football facilities, to provide a cutting-edge, sustainable hub, to benefit both students and the wider community. ⚽ Collaborating with the project team, we led the way with #MEP design, ensuring the building met sustainability standards and achieved an EPC A rating. The new facility provides a high-quality, accessible space that features an energy efficient pavilion building with 4 main changing rooms, shower capacity for four-teams at a time, facilities for officials, a kitchen and café area, alongside 3 new artificial 3G floodlit pitches. We focused on delivering energy-efficient building services that are responsive to varying user needs, with an emphasis on a minimal carbon footprint and adaptability to the external climate.
