Fueled by a burning curiosity and eagerness to learn, Amy Clutterbuck, our Sustainability Associate, embarked on her journey into sustainability after graduating in geography and environmental change. She joined CPW in 2020 and has since become a key player within the sustainability team. Continuously building on her knowledge and expertise in areas such as BREEAM and her new role as an NHS Net Zero Coordinator, Amy drives sustainability across multiple projects. For her, this work isn’t just a job - it’s her passion. As part of our ongoing series highlighting the exceptional talent at CPW and exploring our healthcare projects, we caught up with Amy for a quick Q&A session: 𝐐: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐍𝐇𝐒 𝐍𝐞𝐭 𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥? To put it simply, it’s about ensuring compliance with the NHS #NetZero Building Standard. I collaborate with design teams to integrate sustainability from the start, aligning projects with stringent benchmarks on embodied and operational carbon. For instance, I’ve worked on the Longton Integrated Care Hub and Leek Moorlands Hospital, ensuring they meet the NHS’s ambitious #decarbonisation targets. 𝐐: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐦𝐚𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧? It’s incredibly beneficial because it allows for long-term planning. Healthcare estates can stagger their investments in fabric and infrastructure upgrades, making it more manageable financially. Early engagement is key – the sooner sustainability goals are embedded into design, the better chance you have of meeting those tough carbon targets, particularly with older NHS buildings. 𝐐: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬? We’re seeing a shift towards lower embodied carbon and lower operational energy in new builds, but the real challenge is with refurbishing older, gas-reliant estates. It’s a balancing act – reducing operational energy while maintaining the integrity of these older structures. The ultimate goal is to align with a decarbonised grid, but retrofitting and iterative design are going to be crucial moving forward. Stay tuned for additional insights from Amy, as well as more team spotlights coming soon! To make a tangible difference in community health and climate impact, we must develop upstream solutions that address the socioeconomic and environmental factors that influence health as well as individual health behaviors and access to quality healthcare. Gensler’s research and design prototype Horizon Hospital (developed together with BR+A Consulting Engineers and Thornton Tomasetti) represents an upstream solution and a bold step towards more resilient, equitable, and environmentally conscious healthcare — embracing innovations such as mass timber construction and renewable energy sources. Check out the blog link below, authored by Randy Guillot, FAIA LEED AP Bonny Slater, and Geoffrey Diamond, which captures how Horizon embodies a paradigm shift to shape a sustainable future. By prioritizing critical care, streamlining support services, and designing for long-term adaptability, hospitals can not only minimize environmental impact but also integrate seamlessly into the fabric of their communities. #futureofhealth #futureofwellness https://lnkd.in/gDcj8-a2

Sydney Covey and Mike Lang gave a presentation on the intersection of sustainability and healthcare and how the two can work together to achieve sustainability goals. They discussed ways that hospitals can become sustainable, not just in existing spaces, but in new construction. Another topic they touched on was encouraging existing hospitals to get their Energy Star rating, which is free to get, so they can see how their existing systems are performing, and then they can make a plan for how to improve. Sydney and Mike did a great job educating the audience on this topic! VSHE - Virginia Society of Healthcare Engineers #healthcare #construction #sustainability #lunchandlearn

Some cool new research from Gensler to share… The global healthcare industry is a significant contributor to climate change, accounting for around 5% of greenhouse gas emissions. Hospitals consume 2.6 times more energy than other commercial buildings and produce a staggering 13,000 tons of waste daily. This environmental strain impacts human health and exacerbates disparities in marginalized communities. How can future hospitals become an integral part of our communities? Can we optimize care by prioritizing the environmental factors that impact health? We envision a future where hospitals are smaller, with fewer beds and procedure rooms, focusing on the most complex and critical care. This approach can reduce resource consumption and minimize our carbon footprint. #SustainableDesign #HealthcareInnovation #ClimateAction #Gensler #thorntontomasetti #brplusa

🌿 Practical measures for environmentally friendly hospitals 🏥 We are happy to see that the Green Hospital project and the resulting best practices were featured in a magazine article of the fmpro - Schweizerischer Verband für Facility Management und Maintenance. From the research project "Green Hospital - Resource Efficiency in Swiss Hospitals", a list of practical measures for an environmentally friendly and efficient hospital has been published. 📝 The best practices are defined as practical approaches that reduce the impact on the environment, society and the economy over the entire life cycle while maintaining the quality of healthcare services. A focus was set on measures in those hospital areas for which there was a high level of climate relevance and therefore a great deal of leverage. From an overall perspective, the greatest leverage for environmentally friendly hospitals lies in the construction of long-living and resource-efficient hospital buildings, the use of renewable energies and the expansion of catering services with plant-based products. 🏢🌞🌿 Read the full article in the magazine of the fmpro - Schweizerischer Verband für Facility Management und Maintenance here (in German): https://lnkd.in/gKve35vE #BestPractice #GreenHospital #HealthSector #LCA #EnvironmentalAssessment #NRP73 SNSF Swiss National Science Foundation
