Last Monday, Marielle van Gorp and Nannette Sibinga led an inspiring Impact Management session with our valued client ROOM FOR CHANGE. This #CSR program for hotels harnesses the hospitality industry to help those experiencing temporary homelessness. Together with the key stakeholders*, we further developed the Theory of Change (ToC). We created the roadmap for achieving the desired impact: "Making a positive impact on the well-being of the participants of the program, as well as having a positive impact on the other key stakeholders: the participating hotels, the social partners, the team and the society." ⚡ What is a Theory of Change (ToC)? 💡 ✅ It is a systematic and visual representation of how a program or initiative is expected to achieve its desired impact. ✅ It includes the key components: inputs, activities, outputs (scope of control/direct), outcomes (scope of influence/indirect), and desired impact (impact statement). ✅ It includes the assumptions and contextual factors that are critical to the interventions' success and the indicators and metrics used to track progress and evaluate success. I enjoyed attending Future Leap Network Festival of sustainable Business #FOSB yesterday in Bristol. Some of my favourite takeaways from the morning event included: • I've been considering starting the B Corp journey but had always felt that it was designed for bigger businesses than myself. However, I discovered yesterday that this wasn't the case and often it is much easier to get certification when you are smaller as you don't have to get buy-in from your leadership team and shareholders. There is a free assessment you can do to find out your initial score and also a new free online course, which I'm planning to check out. blabuk.thinkific.com • When communicating about sustainability think about the words you are using, Rin Hamburgh pointed out that changing just one word can alter its interpretation. She talked about her children not wanting to help with chores at home when asking 'can someone help me clear the table', but when she re-worded it to 'Would someone like to be mum's helper?' suddenly she had eager volunteers, the second gave her children ownership of the task and made it something they could feel proud of doing. I think this tool of reframing the message could be very useful for environmental communications. • We need to think more about accessibility Kyrby Brown spoke about how this is often considered of as an afterthought. We need to be engaging with this much earlier on in the process, otherwise we are leaving a huge segment behind. • When trying to communicate about sustainability outside the echo chamber Ed Garrett suggested that we need to understand where people are currently to help them through these challenges we face otherwise people will switch off. I look forward to attending again next year.
