This extended post from #DavidNelsonFinch focuses on the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) and its role, while recognizing deeper challenges and proposing a way ahead. Dealing with government bureaucracy is a labyrinth filled with red tape and legal hurdles, which can be overwhelming and slow. While the DIU facilitates that navigation, it falls short of tackling root problems. A significant issue is the cost to most companies pursuing government contracts, largely due to the delays caused by political, legal, and bureaucratic tangles. The intricacies of budget politics add to this, causing delays and potential funding blockages, underscoring the DIU's relevance.
Senate lawmakers are pushing for the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) to expand its presence across the United States, recognizing the critical role it plays in strengthening national security through the adoption of commercial technology. The fiscal 2025 defense policy bill includes a provision requiring DIU to develop a roadmap for expanding into more regions of the country, particularly in areas that may not be traditional technology hubs. This expansion would involve deeper partnerships with Defense Department laboratories, university research centers, and other entities that are part of local innovation ecosystems. By increasing its footprint nationwide, DIU can better leverage the diverse talent and technology available across the country to address defense challenges. Since its establishment in 2015, DIU has worked closely with Silicon Valley firms to bring cutting-edge technology to the Department of Defense. While California-based companies have received the most contracts, DIU has made efforts to reach out to companies in other states as well. In fact, as of fiscal 2023, DIU had awarded contracts to firms in 35 states. With offices in key innovation hubs like Boston, Austin, and Chicago, as well as recent onramp hubs in Kansas, Ohio, Arizona, Hawaii, and Washington, DIU is creating opportunities for local businesses and universities to engage with DOD and access government funding. These hubs serve as gateways into innovation networks that may otherwise be out of reach for many organizations. DIU Director Doug Beck emphasized the importance of American ingenuity in strengthening the nation's defense capabilities, highlighting the role that local talent and technology play in building a resilient defense industrial base. By expanding its presence and partnerships nationwide, DIU can tap into the innovation capabilities of the entire country, connecting diverse stakeholders directly to DOD needs and fostering collaboration for the benefit of national security. One big issue to overcome with this concept and the SBIR program is how hard acquisition is with the government and the FAR. Until Congress tasks DOD to update the FAR to the 21st centuryas well as T he DFAR many small companies will pursue commercial work rather than partner with the government. As we look towards the future, let's support initiatives like DIU's expansion and partnership efforts to bolster our nation's defense capabilities and leverage the power of innovation across the country. One way to improve this update the FAR. #DefenseInnovation #NationalSecurity #TechnologyPartnerships #InnovationEcosystems #DIUExpansion #sbir #contracting #far #acquistion

Transitioning Service Members, knowing about the Schedule A could mean the difference between securing that federal career following your service, or being underemployed when you get out. Knowing this one fact, would have mitigated so much of my transition-related stress, it's hard for me to put it into words. Veterans without or under a 30% service connection, even if you are 30% or more disabled, using the Schedule A can increase your chances of getting that dream job. Check out the post below, or this one I made a couple of months ago that compares the 30% or More and Schedule A. "Use all tools to increase your chances of securing a federal career. If you're eligible (and you probably are) that includes the Schedule A!" https://lnkd.in/geRsaYqF
Are you seeking employment with the federal government? Do you qualify for special hiring under Schedule A? What is Schedule A you may ask? Check out this session offered by USAID to learn more! June 4, 2024: https://lnkd.in/eqgF8Qfk

Invest the 30 seconds it will take to read this and if it resonates please 🙏 repost. Bottom Line: Oversimplified, the Defense Market is made up of academia, industry, capital and government. Yet we have never organized ourselves in a way which allow us to work better together. To have empathy for another and account for the fact that we (one nation) are all in this together. 🇺🇸 ☠️ Problem: The lack of transparency into the defense market has left it a mystery which has created redundancy and immeasurable inefficiencies. The most important being time. The mission waits for no one and commercialization of defense is now upon us which mean our enemies have access and insight to some of the most lethal open source technologies today. 💡Solution: What if it didn’t need to be that way. What if there was an open ecosystem that curated collaboration across the market allowing us all access to the same insight and opportunities. One that allowed us to learn from eachother and source solutions together. 📚Story We are at a critical juncture. Across the nation and the globe, we see transformative changes in technology, workforce dynamics, and market demands. North Carolina, with its dynamic joint defense ecosystem, world-class universities, diverse industries, and collaborative culture is perfectly positioned as a major player within the joint defense innovation. However, this moment will not wait for us. We must seize the opportunity to align our strengths, address gaps, and invite those aligned to our vision for the future of our innovation economy. What Are We Trying to Accomplish? We aim to ignite collaboration that drives sustained, inclusive growth. Our goal is to cultivate an ecosystem where: 🚀 Startups thrive alongside established businesses. 🚀Research institutions collaborate seamlessly with private enterprise. 🚀Simplifing Technology Transfer for academia and national labs. 🚀Diverse talent is empowered to solve pressing global challenges. 🚀Igniting opportunities for small business 🚀K - College STEM and entrepreneurial education 🚀 Enhancing Strategic Government Partners access to key customers in order to gain valueable insight into the needs of our nations warfighters. 🚀 Military Connected Communities are supported and empowered. We envision North Carolina as the epicenter of innovation—not just competing but setting the standard in sectors like biotech, clean energy, defense, and advanced manufacturing plus more. Nothing short circuits the path to progress and effective direct action like pulling the right people together into the room for face to face collaboration. 👨🎨 The art of the deal is knowing who to court and having the trust and confidence of the network so when the call goes out they will respond. Nicholas Vandre, Jesse Jur, Brennan Townley and RTI International just gathered a powerful cohort of doers and facilitated a sprint design session around what it might look like to reimagine and construct a more forward leaning national security innovation ecosystem in North Carolina. 🏴☠️ With no shortage of hitters and a powerful production base in the State, the cohort was dead set on repositioning NC to maximize on its potential. What was different about this approach was it was not a top down tone-deaf edict, but a vulnerable open and empathetic approach to co-creation, thought generation and collective design enguiniety. 🤝 This was an exceptional example of the impact potential of when State / Gov. agencies truly collaborate with, empower, and provide top cover to entrepreneurial doers. 🎉 Shout out to the Collaboration.Ai and theDifference teams for facilitating, The North Carolina Department of Commerce for stepping up, Nicholas Vandre for being a critical node and connector and Gene Ebersole for demonstrating what can be done when one knows how the game is played and who to call on and out when the time is right. Its early in the game, but this is a movement to keep tabs on. This first round was like a mini #DEF reunion!
