According to the National League of Cities, short-term financial assistance programs are the least expensive policy intervention for preventing homelessness. Such examples include emergency rental assistance, security deposit assistance and utility payment assistance. This assistance can be vital to households experiencing circumstantial hardships that are making it difficult to pay their bills, the article states. This is what we are attempting to do through the Cooper Charitable Foundation. Most of the grants we have provided are paying for security deposits and first and last month's rent — the biggest barriers to housing. Other grants have helped pay someone's rent when they hit hard times. For instance, we assisted one man who got laid off but had a new position he was starting the next month. We provided that gap assistance. 🌱 Do-Good Mondays: Setting the Tone for a Positive Week 🌞 A couple of weeks ago I celebrated another year around the Sun, and one of the gifts I received was a donation made to Shelter on my behalf. Shelter is a housing and homelessness charity that provides free, confidential advice to people with all kinds of housing problems. They tackle the root causes of the housing crisis by lobbying for new laws and policies, and investment to improve the lives of homeless and badly housed people, and work with the housing sector to promote good practice, publish reports, and deliver professional training. While this charity is focusing its work on the UK, the issue they are tirelessly fighting is, unfortunately, common to a lot of countries - probably including the country you are based. So, what good can you do this Monday? 🍀 👉 Here are my three suggestions: 1. Look into local nonprofits in your community working to address homelessness and housing insecurity. Get familiar with their work and support them in any way you can - even if it's just sharing it with your network. 2. Spring cleaning will surely bring out items that you completely forgot about and don't need - donating them to relevant charity shops is better than keeping them forgotten somewhere in your wardrobe! 3. Our night shelters have received more than 1000 referrals for men and we are about to reach 500 for women. This number is completely unprecedented, showing the huge growth in demand for our services. It is also in line with the wider trend of rising homelessness in London. The GLA’s latest Combined Homelessness And Information Network (CHAIN) report showed a 23% increase in rough sleeping compared to a year before, while the Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities’ latest rough sleeping snapshot showed a 32% increase in London. We receive referrals from individuals, other charities and government services. We boosted our service provision significantly this year, but the enormous number of people without a safe place to sleep is simply more than charities are able to provide for. We will continue to support to as many people as we can, but ultimately the only way that the problem can properly be tackled is through government policy. With a General Election taking place this year, we urge all parties to make housing and homelessness a top priority.
