THE BENEFITS OF THE BOOK NOOK: we’re hearing a lot about what Architectural Digest called ‘2024’s First Major Design Trend’ aka Bookshelf Wealth. It’s a fashion I’m totally in favour of because whilst it’s based on the idea of books being used to support a particular interiors aesthetic it does, at the very least, introduce them back into the home environment. So maybe, just maybe, someone will put their mobile phone down for a while, reach for a book and discover the magic to be found in its pages. The benefits of reading are so much greater than what you’ll get back from watching 10-second videos of dancing actors (unless of course the actor is Ryan Gosling 😆). Amongst other benefits, Healthline Media claims that reading helps in ‘strengthening your brain, increasing your ability to empathize, reducing stress, and building your vocabulary’. So off the back of the Bookshelf Wealth trend, I’m going to put in a word for the Book Nook. We don’t all live in homes with vast amounts of spare space so instead, create a beautifully curated cozy corner to encourage the reader/s to stay a while, relax and lose themselves in the pages of a Victorian novel, a book about lions or a contemporary short story. It’s also a great place for the kids to discover ‘The Tiger Who Came To Tea’ or ‘Horrible Histories’ and somewhere you can read to them and make memories they’ll treasure for life. And when improving your home, always consider buying or commissioning professional upcycling, the benefits to you, your interiors and the planet are enormous. Elements to plan for are: - good lighting so objects are clearly seen - objects are visible from both standing and wheelchair height - space around the items on display for easy access from mobility devices and support animals The age of your audience can determine the height too. Getting creative and looking from your ideal client can be fun! For example, consider childrens sight lines: - low hanging wall works - low-set shelves - short pedestals And while times are tough for so many businesses in Australia, consider how you can use what you already have, in a new setting. Accessible design is universal design! Just ask Dr. Stephanie Cawthon - or read her upcoming book. These pathways through Italian train stations are *great* for your wheeled luggage, strollers, etc. Smooth tracks, easy to maneuver, less road-noise. But that’s not what they’re there for. The pathways go throughout the stations, helping folks with visual impairments navigate. Note the change in texture where the two paths intersect. A third texture marks the terminus of a path at an escalator. Simple. Effective. Universal. Also great for when you’re too distracted by your phone to note where you’re going.
