As AFROTECH 2024 ended yesterday, I must say that this year continued to provide yet again in terms of people, education, and overall entertainment. Talks about the emerging technology within data, AI/ML, and how to properly leverage them in today's society, it is clear how important it is to stay up to date with all of this information.
No matter the race or gender, it is always inspiring to see people reach the levels that they have aspired to reach, but seeing so many successful African American men and women in Tech succeed the way that they are, shows me that they are no different than anyone else. With the proper drive, passion, and belief in God and yourself, there are no heights you cannot reach.
Overall, I believe my key takeaway from this conference is the realization that my mindset going into this was completely different compared to the last 2 that I have attended. My first AfroTech, I was desperate to get an internship (thank you to Schrödinger for providing me with one). My second AfroTech, I was desperate for a full time job. This time around I wanted to take a different approach. I have been talking a lot about stories recently and wanting to hear the history behind everyone else's. From hearing from an older gentleman about how he is taking a young man under his wing to mentor him in the ways he can improve his communication skills, to a young woman wanting to help people not experience similar unfortunate circumstances that she went through, shows me that everyone has different reasons to want to bring real change into the world for various reason, through a story that is unique to them.
It is much easier to make genuine connections with people when you are willing to ask authentic questions and be a little vulnerable to truly understand and establish the relationships that people are looking to build. Remembering not to only share your stories but also hearing other peoples stories, I believe is integral in our society in order to build unity and cohesion in an ever expanding world that seemingly growing divided.
