One of our final stories that we are thrilled to recap is our collaboration with the Crystal Brook community, Belgravia Leisure and Port Pirie Regional Council to make the Crystal Brook Swimming Pool more inclusive for all. First raised during a six-monthly Community Network Forum held at the pool, local residents highlighted that the existing infrastructure did not adequately meet the needs of patrons with mobility challenges, including those living with physical disabilities, frailty, chronic conditions or injuries. Belgravia Foundation, in collaboration with key stakeholders supported the application for a $10,000 grant from the 2024 Clements Gap Sustainable Community Fund which was successful. Combined with additional contributions from a dedicated local community group, accessible steps are now scheduled to be installed at the Crystal Brook Swimming Pool during the summer season. Through Belgravia Foundation's leadership and guidance, Belgravia Leisure and the Port Pirie Regional Council are planning further upgrades, including relocating a chair lift to the pool, to provide even greater accessibility. This project is a testament to what community input and teamwork can achieve, breaking down barriers for individuals with mobility challenges. We can’t wait to share with you the wonderful outcomes of implementing the accessible pool steps. Read more today at https://lnkd.in/gtbCpCQB

We are really excited to have brokered what is thought to be the first natural capital partnership in Scotland between an educational institution and a community landowner. Over the next 50 years, The University of Edinburgh will support Kinloch Woodlands, a partner in our Northwoods Rewilding Network, to restore native woodland across a huge area overlooking Loch Torridon, bringing benefits to biodiversity, climate and local people. 🌿 Community support is a key part of the agreement, with Kinloch Woodlands – a community charity – receiving financing over the course of the project to reinvest into the local community of Shieldaig. If you get chance please listen to the heart felt plea from Leicester's Adventure Playgrounds on Radio Leicester's Ady Dayman breakfast show this morning. It is 1 hour and 41 minutes in to Ady's show. It is also covered by BBC East Midlands below. The reality of the situation is they have been set up to fail. They have been given 5 months to come up with a sustainable business plan with no security of tenure and no support as of yet despite what Leicester City Council might say. Equally they are not cutting finances to all non statutory services. The subsidy they provide to operate their leisure services is huge. Taking New Parks Leisure Centre for example it is losing money year on year. They are also missing the impact strategically that the Adventure Playgrounds have on their statutory services like Public Health and the long term cost of young people not being active. No wonder childhood obesity rates are what they are in Leicester. This decision to withdraw financial support for such a valuable service really needs rethinking https://lnkd.in/eZQtHFPW

At a Council Cabinet meeting on 20 November senior councillors agreed to work with the Fields in Trust organisation to assess the viability of placing Horsham Park into trust under a scheme that they manage, in order to protect the park in perpetuity to ensure long term accessibility of the Park for the local community. Fields in Trust is a British charity which was set up in 1925 as the National Playing Fields Association. It protects parks and green spaces and promotes the cause of accessible spaces for play, sports and recreation in British cities and towns. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture Cllr David Skipp commented: "It's widely acknowledged that having easy access to outdoor space and being able to exercise there has many mental and physical benefits for individuals and families. We are really pleased that we are now considering the Fields in Trust scheme and looking to protect Horsham Park which is a key and much-loved green space in the middle of Horsham town. We will work with them to explore how best to preserve the Park for the benefit of our residents and the natural environment."

In the northern part of Nashville sits Parkwood Estates, a neighborhood that houses generational stories. But like other majority-minority communities, Parkwood Estates has felt the rejection of disinvestment year after year. They’ve also suffered the effects of climate change as summers get hotter with parks and green spaces few and far between, creating a heat island effect. One local non-profit, the Cumberland River Compact’s Root Nashville initiative envisioned a grassroots effort to engage residents to plant free trees, thanks to a grant from the Arbor Day Foundation. 12 neighborhoods were identified where planting efforts would be prioritized. The initiative was launched in the Parkwood Estates neighborhood, where 100 volunteers mostly made up of residents, got their hands in the dirt and planted 300 trees. Many more planting events are scheduled in other low-income neighborhoods. What grows out of this is an opportunity for residents to have a hand in shaping the future of their communities. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gW_daNr2

Leading up to it, I was also asked to cover and write a story for the Diocese of Parramatta who had an #activeforvocations team fundraising to support young men in their journey to become priests.
