Another misguided political stunt. If you think this will make a difference, you don’t understand TV and film tax incentives. California’s 25% rate is one of the lowest—some states go as high as 45%, and internationally, incentives can be even more competitive. Newsom’s proposal also keeps restrictive rules, excluding actor salaries and above-the-line costs, which are big parts of film budgets. States like Georgia offer better incentives with no such limits and now have the infrastructure to support it. This won’t change the reality: other states offer better incentives, now have the infrastructure, and, ultimately, are simply more competitive.

WARNING: KNX (1070 AM or 97.1 FM) so-called News is propaganda. The producers and reporters interweave the propaganda with news, weather, and traffic. Twice now over the last 2 weeks I have heard right-wing ideology over the radio without any context or perspective. For example: KNX allowed Republican attendees at the Republican National Convention to voice their opinions of Donald Trump’s 92-minute acceptance speech without context or fact-checking the multiple lies from Donald Trump in that speech. No context and no fact-checking at KNX. Another example: today I hear the reporter introduce somebody like a political consultant who lists the so-called advantages of Donald Trump over Kamala Harris. Again, there was no context, no perspective, and nobody else presenting ideas over the radio to challenge the refutable information about the economy and border security coming out of the mouth of the right-winger. And then the KNX reporter cut to another story. KNX is giving free radio air time for unchecked right-wing rhetoric. Sorry to report, but in the summer of 2024 KNX is not to be trusted as a source of information for anything other than maybe traffic. JTB 8-4-24 https://lnkd.in/gnZExfG6

“In 2022, the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) accepted a (near) music industry-wide settlement to improve songwriters’ streaming royalty rates in the United States from January 1, 2023. The settlement – known as ‘Phonorecords IV’ or ‘CRB IV’ – will see songwriters and music publishers paid a headline rate of 15.35% of a given interactive streaming service’s US revenue by 2027. That rate is being ‘phased in’, because ‘Phonorecords IV’ covers the five-year period between 2023 and 2027: In 2023 (starting January 1), songwriters and music publishers were to be paid a headline rate of 15.1% of a US service’s revenue; in 2024, this increased to 15.2%; in 2025, it will increase to 15.25%; in 2026 it will increase to 15.3%; and in 2027 it will reach 15.35%. Through legislation moves like these two bills, the stage is set for the industry to come together and work out the systems and methods of protecting talent with the “4 C’s” of Consent, Control, Credit, and Compensation.

With a notable focus on genre films, the independent film industry is gathering to confront market challenges in a bold new setting. A New Venue and New Energy Relocating from Los Angeles, where AFM was a fixture for over four decades, the Las Vegas setting promises to bring renewed energy to the market. At the Palms Casino Resort, all activities—from screenings to panels to networking events—are conveniently held under one roof, a feature set to alleviate some of the logistical challenges of prior years. By consolidating everything into one venue, AFM aims to foster a community atmosphere, allowing filmmakers, distributors, and buyers to maximize their time without shuttling across various locations. With 286 sales, production, and distribution companies registered, including significant players, AFM sees increased interest from international representatives spanning 80 countries. The Rise of Genre Films Amid Uncertain Markets In an industry facing unpredictable returns from theatrical releases, genre films have emerged as a key investment focus at this year’s AFM. Genre films, especially horror and action, command significant buyer interest due to their strong built-in audiences and relatively lower risk. The recent success of horror films like Longlegs and Terrifier 3 has reinforced this trend, with AFM showcasing an impressive slate of horror and action offerings. Projects generating buzz include George A. Romero’s final zombie movie, Twilight of the Dead, directed by Brad Anderson, and the psychological thriller Victoria Psycho, which reunites Sanctuary star Margaret Qualley with director Zachary Wigon. Action films are also gaining traction, with high-profile offerings such as Cleaner, featuring Daisy Ridley in a Die Hard-style thriller, and The Last Druid, a sword-and-sandals epic led by Russell Crowe.
