137 languages. 35 indigenous languages. ESL. ASL. Advanced lessons up to CEFR C2. There’s a lot to learn in Transparent Language Online! And we're always adding more. In recent years, the priority was to add more content in our most popular languages like Spanish, French, ASL, and so on. 2024 took us in another direction: supporting "less common"—but no less important—language pairings. Think ESL, indigenous languages, and support for immigrant & migrant populations around the world. A few ✨highlights✨ from this year: ✅ Supporting more than 250 librarians who are running English language programs at their libraries. ✅ Adding 7 new indigenous languages in partnership with 7000 Languages. ✅ Partnering with a national library system to create custom courses for newcomers to their country. ✅ Redesigning the more focused, goal-oriented learner dashboard to help learners make the most of their time. ✅ Partnering with UniversalClass to bring more continuing ed opportunities to library patrons around the world. We can't wait to show you what's coming in 2025. Until then, happy new year & happy learning.

Transparent Language Online new language pairings a Game Changer for Danish Central Libraries DCA client Transparent Language Online (TLO) this month launched pioneering new language pairings for Danish Central Libraries (DCL). TLO has transformed their service for DCL, adding 14 new language courses for Danish speakers and 8 new Danish courses for migrants. Until now, nearly all available language learning courseware has been English-based and options for smaller language speakers looking for courseware in their own language were limited or non-existent. There was a clear need for courseware to serve languages other than English. The widespread use of the English language has had an impact on linguistic variety worldwide, resulting in the marginalisation and possible eradication of indigenous languages. TLO's new Language Pairings will empower more people to learn more languages using their own; promoting linguistic equality, cultural diversity and “smaller” languages in general. Established in 1991 to teach US government employees, TLO is a leading language teaching service offering courses in over 110 languages from English and 35 Second Language courses from other languages. Today TLO is used in more than 12,000 libraries, organizations, and educational institutions worldwide. Although many Danes speak English well, learning a third language from a second language presents many challenges. Now for the first time, all Danes can learn 14 key languages in their own tongue and at their own pace. TLO and DCL worked together to create beginner Danish language courseware for speakers of Ukrainian, Mandarin, Arabic, English, Polish, Dari, Turkish and Farsi. The courseware focuses on key language competencies to help non-native speakers adjust to life in Denmark and gain employment. The courses are highly practical, covering topics from basic greetings to getting an identity card and finding work. Multilingualism is good both for the economy and social cohesion and libraries are the ideal vector for delivering effective free courseware for all. TLO's new language pairings bring three big benefits: enabling all citizens to learn new languages, empowering migrants to integrate faster, and promoting indigenous languages. We are very proud to be involved in this groundbreaking project that gives a leading library system a starring role in promoting multilingualism and social cohesion. We're ready to roll out more new TLO language pairings across the EU and beyond. If you want to learn more about how TLO can transform your library’s language learning offer, get in touch. You might think of language learning resources as a "nice to have" at your public library. Pick up some French before your next trip, free with your library card. Pretty cool. But for many libraries, language is becoming a "must have". They provide a critical lifeline for immigrants, migrants, and refugees who need to learn the local language ASAP just to get by. It's a big ask to provide both, especially for libraries in regions with lesser learned language combinations. But we make it manageable! We're thrilled to have done so for Danish Central Libraries (Centralbibliotek). Now every Dane—and newcomers to Denmark—can use their library card to access free language courses taught in their native language. Whether that's Danish or Dari. Learn more on the blog. If you need to learn Persian Farsi, you need Farangis! She recently wrapped up an intensive Capstone course with a high-level student who has come back to refresh his skills with her every year for *7 years*. That probably speaks for itself. But if not, the student puts it pretty well too: "Farangis is an exceptionally talented Farsi instructor. She is most skilled at bringing her considerable social and cultural thoughts into our discussions. She makes custom lessons for me in the CL-150 so I can review the exact vocabulary from the discussions. Farangis’s energy and encouragement has been exceptional, and I am eager to continue our lessons." 👏Bravo, Farangis!
