At one time the entire Caribbean was Spanish controlled for a short period, but sparsely settled in many places. The English inroads developed in the outer regions during times of Spanish commitment in Europe over the next 150 years after 1519. The impact of Spanish or Hispanic culture isn’t long lasting and instead English, French, Dutch became the dominant creole based language in places like Jamaica, western third of Hispaniola, the lesser Antilles, and ABC desert islands, and the Virgin Islands. The English and Dutch derived syncretic cultures that took hold in places like Jamaica, Barbados, Sint Maarten, and Curaçao have a very separate history and culture from their Latin (Romance) French, Spanish and to a lesser extent Portuguese. Portuguese technically meets the Criteria for “Latin Based,” but has took distinct a history and culture to be included by any modern scholars under that term.

Native languages are disappearing rapidly, taking with them unique histories, identities, and ways of understanding the world. 🌍 Preserving Indigenous languages is more than safeguarding words—it’s protecting generations of wisdom and cultural identity. This work begins in our classrooms, where each language we integrate helps students see the full picture of our diverse history. Creating a space for these stories and perspectives not only honors Native voices but also builds a more inclusive learning environment for all students.
