About us
The International Center for Language Studies (ICLS) was founded in 1966 in Washington, DC as a locally-owned, private organization dedicated to teaching foreign languages and English as a Second Language. Since its inception, ICLS has worked cooperatively with international organizations, government agencies, private companies, and individual students from all over the world, providing language instruction and testing in over 80 languages. We train diplomats, government and military officials, business executives, development specialists, university and college students, medical personnel, lawyers, judges, economists, and their families. Our relationships with government agencies and international organizations such as the US Agency for International Development, the Department of Defense and the World Bank have been long-standing; most have been our clients for over 20 years. Our relationships with individuals who have made language learning a life-long commitment have been just as long. Accredited by the Commission on English Language Accreditation (CEA), ICLS is authorized under Federal Law to enroll non-immigrant alien students and has been designated by the U.S. Department of State as a sponsor of an Exchange Visitor Program. ICLS is located in a vital area of downtown Washington. It is just a few blocks away from the White House and a five-minute walk to both the McPherson (Blue and Orange Lines) and Farragut North (Red Line) Metro stations.

Christmas came early this year!😎🎁 A little over a year and a half ago, while trying to finish up graduate school and staring down another PCS to begin IRT, I was sitting flat at a L2/R2/S1+😩 - already a slight dip from the year prior when I first left DLI. However, thanks to a ton of support I wrapped up this year with a modest L3/R2+/S2+. A testament to balancing hours of self-study while pushing myself to make the most out of IRT. (✅2024 New Year Resolution) Here's to consolidating these gains💪 in 2025! A day well spent in the heart of D.C.! Our teacher Allison and our ESL students had an amazing time exploring the festive @dcholidaymarket, soaking up the holiday cheer and discovering unique treasures. 🎄✨The adventure continued at Kramers, a one-of-a-kind bookstore beautifully blended with a cozy restaurant and coffee shop—perfect for unwinding and connecting. What a memorable way to embrace the season and experience the charm of D.C.! #ICLSDC #VacationEnglish #ESL

I have been blessed in recent days with the opportunity to speak on three amazing podcasts. Last Wednesday I spoke with Robin Ayoub, Vice President of Lionbridge Canada, and former President of Canadian Language Industry Association | Association canadienne de l’industrie de la langue. Robin hosts the Localization Fireside Chat podcast covering a very wide range of topics in the #translation, #interpreting and #localization ecosystem. Robin is also an old friend who I also recently bumped into in Riyadh at the International Translation Forum (https://lnkd.in/dQQef5pF), hosted by Dr. Hailah Alkhalaf, PhD, FHEA's team at the Ministry of Culture of the Kingdom of Saudia Arabia (KSA). We had actually done the interview there in the board room of the وزارة الثقافة Ministry of Culture, but we had to re-do it due to some sound issues. We mused over the wonderful hospitality of the Saudis (you have to try camel) and their strong push to invest in #language studies for both men and women. Everyone seemed to have a doctorate in KSA and I was called "doctor" repeatedly, which made me squirm but they were all very much convinced that I somehow deserved that title... I then had the pleasure of talking with Florian Faes, of Slator. We discussed my crazy business travel schedule this year, having attended: - the Association of Language Companies UnConference in Cancun (February), - VAMOS JUNTOS in Lima, Peru (March) [best event of the year by far!] - SlatorCon in London (May), - my wild and surreal bus ride to Kyiv (June), - Asociación Argentina de Servicios Lingüísticos (AASL) Annual Retreat, held in Mendoza (August), - Association of Language Companies Annual Summit in Montreal and SlatorCon in Menlo Park (September), - GlobalSaké —for growth’s sake in San Francisco followed quickly by LocWorld in Monterey (October), - the International Translation Forum in Riyadh (November), - the Globalization and Localization Association (GALA) Road Show in Cordoba (last Friday). We also touched on my upcoming trip to Tanzania and Ethiopia where I will be speaking at the 5th Africa International Translation Conference (https://lnkd.in/diHVJVmr) in Zanzibar, on February 7-8, 2025. Wow! Finally yesterday Mark Shriner, of Breeze Docs and memoQ, hosted Renato Beninatto, of Nimdzi Insights, Karen Decker, President of Association of Language Companies and International Center for Language Studies, and Andrzej Nedoma, former owner of XTRF™ Translation Business Management and lidolang a SeproTec company, and myself to talk about VAMOS JUNTOS, the 3rd Annual Summit of Juntos - Association of Language Services of Latin America and the Caribbean to be held in Mexico City on March 14-15, 2025. What a year! Woo hoo!
