Imagine having to learn physics in a foreign language? South Africa has more than 10 official languages (and several didn't get even that status). As far as I can see, the biggest obstacles to mother tongue education together with fluency in dominant languages for all, is content-heavy fixed curricula plus far too much structured time. Why waste multiple hours 'learning' content that will be forgotten due to lack of interest and personal relevance? Let the child navigate their own interest in their mother tongue with a same-language facilitator, online access including modern translation tools, and everything flows, and faster. Fluency in additional languages comes quickest through immersive unstructured contact with mother tongue speakers - give kids loads of time to play in age-mixed language-mixed groups. Scrapping prescribed curricula will make plenty of space for that. It's time to let go of our old ideas of what school looks like. Let's start from new foundations. Systematically fulfil every right of every child - Rights-Centric Education - and there's no longer a problem. The problem is the faith that we can make the transition, and the sacrifice is the adult vested interests in profit from textbooks etc. https://lnkd.in/d5VMbudh

There are over 6,700 languages in the world, but only about 200 have official status as state languages. In 1989, the "Law on the State Language" was passed, according to which the Uzbek language was given the status of a state language. In accordance with the law of 2020, 21 October has been declared the Day of the Uzbek Language. According to UNESCO, at least 40% of the more than 6,700 languages spoken around the world are threatened with extinction in the long term, due to a lack of speakers. Currently, more than 50 million people speak Uzbek. UNESCO's World Inequality Database on Education (https://lnkd.in/e2ASRfa) shows that children who receive education in the language spoken at home are 30% more likely to comprehend text by the time they finish primary school. Additionally, receiving education in one's first or mother tongue helps improve children's social skills. For our people, the Uzbek language is not only the state language but also a symbol of our national identity and spiritual values. Developing our mother tongue and conducting all sectors, especially science, ICT, and education, in the state language will enhance its prestige and provide a basis for its preservation. PROMOTING OUR NATIVE LANGUAGE IN NIGERIA Despite English being the primary language for communication, our native languages hold immense value. Using them in schools fosters cultural consciousness, unity among students, and fluency. We can't even imagine how it would sound if we ever try to teach in our mother tongue, because we think it would be funny. It's certain that those students who cant speak English or don't even understand it, will learn if teaching is done is our native languages. Teaching subjects like Chemistry and Physics in our native languages can improve understanding, retention, and academic performance. This approach can preserve our culture, linguistic pride, and identity. Imagine students learning complex concepts without the barrier of a foreign language - the clarity and understanding would be remarkable. Other countries excel academically by learning in their mother tongue. Let's replicate this success by embracing our linguistic heritage. By doing so, we can create a more inclusive, effective, and culturally relevant learning system that benefits all students. On this International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, we celebrate the 476 million Indigenous Peoples across 90 countries who speak a majority of the world’s 7,000 languages. We are proud to spotlight three communities that are using technology and storytelling to preserve and promote Indigenous languages. In Bihar, the Azad India Foundation leverages StoryWeaver to promote reading in the Surjapuri language. They have translated 200+ storybooks in the language for children in their learning centres. In Meghalaya, the SauraMandala Foundation | Centre for Accelerated Development has reimagined Indigenous folklore into 45 picture books for children in Garo, Khasi, and Pnar. As Eleanor Sangma, Author of Ambi’s Little Things said, "I’ve often felt writing is less of a choice and more of a nudge from my ancestors. It's as if they're gently reminding me, 'Our stories matter, don't let them slip away.” Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, the Fundación Alfredo Harp Helú Oaxaca has mobilized over 450 digital activists to create a vibrant repository of children’s literature in languages like #Chatino and #Mixe, translating 1,500 storybooks into indigenous languages in Mexico.
