During my teacher training, I have begun turning on the subtitles where possible when playing videos to my classes. It is a small act which takes seconds for promoting literacy in the classroom, which across all subjects is vital for improving students' reading and comprehension skills. Turn on the Subtitles research shows that "the mere presence of words at the bottom of the screen will encourage students to read them, automatically improving word recognition, content comprehension and code-related literacy skills".

I am in total support of subtitles. Subtitles are not just for movies and TV shows anymore – they are a powerful tool for digital accessibility and learning! This is a perfect example of how important inclusive innovations/tools are! Subtitles are a fantastic inclusive tool for those with an auditory disability or impairment but they can benefit others outside their intended audience too. I always watch shows with subtitles because if there is background noise, I'm eating or I can't have the sound loud because it's late, they're perfect to help me keep up with what I'm watching. Turning them on for children is something I never considered but it's a great idea for improving word recognition, speed reading and concentration. #Reading #InclusiveTools #Teaching #InclusiveInnovation #Inclusion
