About us
The name of this Association shall be the Gender, Race, and Justice Journal (“Journal”). Its object shall be to publish a legal periodical; to serve as a teaching vehicle by providing means for the students of Thurgood Marshall School of Law (“TMSL”) to enhance their research and writing abilities; and in general to advance the study and development of law. The Thurgood Marshall School of Law Gender, Race, and Justice Law Journal is a student-run organization whose primary purpose is to publish a journal of legal scholarship. The Journal is published biannually in the Spring. Student editors make all editorial and organizational decisions and, together with faculty advisors, carry out day-to-day operations. Aside from serving as an important academic forum for legal scholarship, the Journal has two other goals. First, it is designed to be an effective research tool for practicing lawyers and students of the law. Second, it provides opportunities for Journal members to develop their own editing and writing skills. Accordingly, each issue contains pieces by student editors as well as outside authors. The Journal is a source of open discussion for both traditional and modern thorough legal commentary and analysis. While the foundation of its forum is settled in feminist and racial perception under legal confines, the Journal shall be open to all issues that correspond to the multitude of labels applied to individuals that classifies and stratifies them under the law including but not limited to racial, gender, socio-economic, and sexual identity. The Journal shall seek to advance its campus, community, and society towards a vision, where "justice" is indisputably an act of fairness and equity, by becoming a respectful and meaningful medium of expression that addresses struggles against oppression. It is the mission of the Journal to be the spark that ignites the passionate flame of positive change within the hearts of those within the realm of our legal system.

Last week, I was honored to attend the 26th annual Entertainment Law Initiative Grammy Week event, the nation’s preeminent gathering for entertainment attorneys. This year’s event honored Atlantic Records’ Executive Vice President of Business & Legal Affairs and General Counsel Michael Kushner with the 2024 Entertainment Law Initiative Service Award, which each year recognizes an attorney committed to advancing and supporting the music community through service. I also had the privilege of hearing Michelle Jubelirer deliver a brilliant keynote address at the event and reconnect with my BESLA family, a generous sponsor of the Entertainment Law Initiative. The Recording Academy’s Entertainment Law Initiative was established to encourage discussion and debate around legal affairs in the ever-evolving music industry and how they impact creatives and the greater music community. The initiative offers year-round professional networking and career development and cultivates the next generation through connection and educational opportunities for JD and LLM candidates. Thank you to Neil Crilly, Kristen Baum, Megan Winsor, and Allison Lapinski for the opportunity to support ELI this year and GrammyU for selecting me to attend ELI and supporting Grammy Week events in my role as a Grammy U Ambassador for the Recording Academy’s Texas Chapter. Lastly, a special shoutout to Helen Turner because none of this would have been possible without being able to follow in your brightly lit footsteps. Until next year! #entertainmentlawinitiative #entertainmentlaw #grammyu #recordingacademy #RAELI #intellectualpropertylaw #lawstudent #lawschool #hbuclawschool #hbculaw

I had a great time attending the Hip Hop Beyond 50: Protecting and Promoting Culture virtual event hosted by the U.S. Copyright Office. As an aspiring intellectual property attorney, I was able to learn from copyright experts and practitioners about how hip-hop has influenced creators worldwide and about the Office resources available on sampling, interpolations, and beat stores. Thank you to all the guest speakers for an immensely informative presentation to celebrate the 50th year of hip-hop.
