Middle School Law Camp is a fun, educational, and interactive experience, providing young scholars an introduction to legal careers, the chance to build professional skills, and connections with judges, lawyers, and other legal leaders. 🎓📚 Last week, JTB hosted Law School 101 - a virtual program that exposes undergraduate students to various legal career paths and the law school admissions process. For three days, 57 students were presented with an incredible lineup of sessions designed to equip aspiring law students with the tools for success. On May 21, Amy S. Mangione, Associate Dean of Admissions at the University of Richmond School of Law, kicked things off with "Strategies for Success: Building Your Most Competitive Law School Application." Her insights were invaluable for those looking to strengthen their applications. The next day, Sonia Bychkov Green, Associate Professor of Law at the University of Illinois Chicago Law School, led a Mock Law School Class on "How to Brief a Case," providing attendees with practical skills and a taste of what to expect in law school. Finally, on May 23, we explored "Topics in Law: Intellectual Property" with Valérie Cambronne, Trademark Attorney at Wood IP and Co-founder of LegallyBlack, and Kiara Ortiz, Attorney Advisor for the FCC and Co-founder of LegallyBlack. Their expertise highlighted the fascinating world of IP law and the opportunities it holds. A huge thank you to our inspiring speakers for sharing their experiences and wisdom and our eager students for their enthusiasm and excellent questions. Look mom and dad - I made it! ⚖️ After dedicating three years to studying the law, this weekend I walked in the University of Houston Law Center’s commencement ceremony and received my degree. I am immeasurably grateful to my loved ones for supporting me throughout this experience (which has proven to be one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done) and never failing to provide timely encouragement. I am shocked and honored to be 1 of 5 students selected by faculty to receive the 2024 “Distinguished Service Award” during commencement. It is truly an honor to be recognized and in the company of some of the most brilliant new lawyers. ✨

Last month I was invited to attend the annual gala of the Houston Lawyers Association and was 1 of 5 students selected to receive a scholarship award! ✨ I am thankful to be recognized for my academic efforts and for the opportunity to network with attorneys passionate about their careers and community impact. In January, I started a nonprofit organization called Black Women in Law (BWL) to elevate the voices of Black women in the legal profession. BWL’s first initiative is to help increase the percentage of Black female federal law clerks. Only 4% of federal law clerks are Black and the percentage is even smaller for Black women. The Legacy Program is a one-year mentorship program designed for Black women who aspire to clerk in federal courts. Mentees will receive advice, feedback, and encouragement from Black women who are current or former federal law clerks.
