🩺 November is Diabetes Awareness Month. It may come as a surprise that 98 million Americans are diagnosed with prediabetes, which is when blood sugar is higher than normal but not high enough to meet diagnostic criteria for Type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes is one of the risk factors of Type 2 diabetes, along with: ◻️ Being overweight ◻️ Being 45 or older ◻️ Having a close family member with Type 2 diabetes ◻️ Lack of physical activity (i.e.: being physically active less than three times a week) ◻️ Having had gestational diabetes ◻️ Being African American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian American, or Pacific Islander The good news is that prediabetes may be reversed. With regular exercise, managing diet, and relieving stress, the risks of developing Type 2 diabetes may be reduced. Talk to your Kelsey-Seybold primary care clinician if you think you may be at risk for Type 2 diabetes. #KelseySeyboldClinic #DiabetesAwareness #HealthyLiving

🩺 Lung cancer is the leading cause of death from cancer among both men and women in the United States. Diagnosing lung cancer at an early stage may increase your chances of successful treatment, which is why early detection is crucial for your general health and wellbeing. Talk with your doctor if you experience any of the following common symptoms of lung cancer: ◻️ Coughing ◻️ Chest pain ◻️ Wheezing ◻️ Shortness of breath ◻️ Coughing up blood ◻️ Fatigue ◻️ Weight loss with no known cause 👉 Is screening for lung cancer right for you? The American Cancer Society recommends yearly screenings for lung cancer with a low-dose CT scan for people between the ages of 50 and 80 years who: ◻️ Smoke or used to smoke ◻️ Have a history of smoking one pack a day for 20 years or two packs a day for 10 years 👨⚕️ The best thing you can do to prevent lung cancer is to avoid smoking. Nearly 90 percent of lung cancer cases are caused by smoking tobacco products, which can cause cancer almost anywhere in your body. “It’s never too late to take charge of your health – no matter how long you have been a smoker, quitting smoking will lower your risk of lung cancer,” says Samim Jafri, MD, a pulmonologist and critical care physician at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. For help quitting smoking, talk to your primary care provider about whether smoking cessation therapies are right for you. #KelseySeyboldClinic #LungCancerAwarenessMonth #CancerAwareness

🩺 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. While there is no way to know with certainty if you are going to get breast cancer, there are some risk factors to consider. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some common breast cancer risk factors that cannot be changed include: ◻️ Advanced age ◻️ Genetic mutations ◻️ Reproductive history – beginning menstruation before age 12, and menopause after age 55 ◻️ Having dense breasts ◻️ History of breast cancers or breast diseases ◻️ Family history of breast or ovarian cancer ◻️ Treatment using radiation therapy ◻️ Exposure to the drug diethylstilbestrol (DES) While these risk factors may influence your individual risk for breast cancer, they do not necessarily determine whether you will get the disease. Other risk factors for breast cancer that you may be able to change include: ◻️ Lack of physical activity ◻️ Being overweight or having obesity after menopause ◻️ Some hormone replacement therapies and certain oral contraceptives ◻️ First pregnancies after age 30, not breastfeeding, and never carrying a pregnancy to term ◻️ Alcohol consumption ◻️ Smoking – and exposure to other carcinogenic chemicals Speak with your primary care provider about your individual risks for breast cancer, and make a plan for appropriate screenings and activities to help lower your risk from modifiable risk factors. #KelseySeyboldClinic #BreastCancerAwareness #EarlyDetectionBreastCancer #Healthcare
