  • We are truly grateful and honoured to have been given the opportunity to share our insights as Digital Wellness Africa (represented by Loveness Nleya Mahunyepa Nleya and Edith Utete)at the National Cyber Security Strategy Validation Workshop hosted by POTRAZ. We remain committed to representing the interests of vulnerable groups particularly children who are the greatest and most at risk consumers of digital media hence making them easier and constant targets of cyber crimes. How can we create a more secure online experience for children and other vulnerable members of our society? Digital citizenship is EVERYONE'S business. #cybersecurity #cybersmartcitizens #childonlinesafety #dataprotection #digitalageconversations

🚨 Oh, here we are again, with another AI companion bot—Candy AI—going viral. Launched last year, it's gaining traction, marketed as 18+ only. But I decided to test it myself and, not surprisingly, the only age verification was a simple "Are you over 18?"—click yes, and you're in. ⚡ ⚡ We keep seeing apps like Candy AI and Character AI pop up without any real barriers to kids joining. And once again, it's parents who are left to "monitor" and "control". Placing all the responsibilities on parents. ✅ Where’s the regulation to create a digital world where parents don’t need to micromanage every app? We need a safer digital playground, not just a warning label. Parents, Kids Should Not Be Using This App 🚫 or any Ai companion bots. Kids may come to depend on AI for emotional support in ways that aren't healthy. Real relationships require empathy, compromise, and growth—things an AI can’t truly provide. #onlinesafety #intenetsafety #digitalparenting #parenting #cyberawarenessmonth

  • Our children are growing up in a world vastly different from that of their parents. With the rapid advancement of technology, children are exposed to digital devices and the internet at an early age. As a result, it is crucial for parents and educators to recognize the importance of supporting the development of their digital literacy skills as soon as they have digital media access. • This would be an interesting production to watch. Our children have dollar value to some of these Big Tech companies yet who can place a monetary value on the life of a child? Can we trust Big Tech to have the best interest of our children? We need to take a keen interest on what the children see and are exposed to online. Yes, we want them to access opportunities but we want a safe environment for them to do so as healthy individuals.

  • 'Social is not social anymore' We have used that term mainly in the context of being aware of the content we create because it can impact our career. With ads like these 'social' changes to being life altering in a negative way. We need regulation of these platforms. Do you know that ads are moderated before being approved to run on the platforms? It's time to put all hands on deck to protect children online. As parents and guardians, we need to make time to empower children with digital literacy skills before handing over the phone. A lot could be said. What do you think? What are thoughts on this?

While the discussion still rages about social media bans, let’s talk about holding social media companies accountable for their actions. This ads are sponsored, meaning Meta makes money from them. It’s easy to see why it’s so tempting to ban our kids from using these platforms. But that’s not addressing the root cause: these companies putting corporate greed above safety. These ads are not difficult to detect and block. So why haven’t you, Meta?
