Earlier this year, we completed the acquisition of ARE in Australia, expanding our presence in the country and welcoming around 1,500 new colleagues. As part of the integration of the business into SSP, we implemented a number of initiatives to enhance collaboration and create a sense of belonging across the teams. Hayley Bell has joined the SSP team this year as part of the integration and is celebrating her 15-year career milestone. When Hayley first joined ARE, she started as a Front Counter Team Member for Hungry Jacks at the Gold Coast Airport. Today she is General Manager of the Business Unit and National Hungry Jack’s Operations Manager. Hayley’s highlight of joining SSP was the warm welcome from the wider team. She was impressed by how quickly everyone came together to support one another as well as the establishment of an open channel of communication and training implementation to help streamline the transition. Hayley has said the most rewarding aspect of her role is being able to inspire a team while witnessing their growth and success. The best part of Hayley’s journey has been the opportunity to rebuild her life for herself and her daughter, while overcoming personal challenges. Hayley is a proud mum and her passion has even inspired her daughter to join the airport retail industry – and they are now colleagues! Today, our team was joined by some special guests to open the first Marks and Spencer Food store in a travel location in Northern Ireland at the new Translink Belfast Grand Central Station. Whether on their daily commute or visiting the city, we’re open daily for shoppers to enjoy a range of M&S favourites, such as the freshly stocked in-store bakery and popular ‘Food to Go’ range including locally-sourced options from Newry-based supplier; Around Noon. We also have lots of well-loved treats, including the iconic Percy Pigs and Colin the Caterpillars to keep you fuelled throughout the day. Kari Daniels, CEO of SSP UK & Ireland, said: “We have a long-standing relationship with M&S Food and are excited to open our first store together in Northern Ireland. I’m confident that the powerful combination of M&S’s premium food range and our travel retail expertise will make this store a convenient and welcome stop for passengers at Belfast Grand Central Station.”

The opening of the new terminal at Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi this year was exciting, and we were proud to open nine new units at our Food Park alongside a Butler’s Chocolate Café. Our SSP EEME team worked closely with the airport team to ensure that Food Park appealed to the wide range of travellers who pass through this international hub. Food Park, which spans 1,770 square metres and is located airside, accommodates up to 700 guests and mixes internationally recognised brands, local offerings and bespoke regional influenced cuisines like Burger King, Ritazza and Levito, so there is something for everyone. Our team implemented many sustainable practices during the build and operation of the new units, including the use of reclaimed wood, water-based air-conditioning to reduce the consumption of energy and the introduction of operational efficiencies to reduce the impact on the environment. At the 2024 The Airport F&B + Hospitality Conference & Awards (FAB), Food Park was highly commended in the Airport Food Hall of The Year category. See photos of our fantastic Food Park below.
