  • 🌍 Excited to share insights from a recent Heat Pump Ready workshop, where we explored Nesta’s new Clean Heat Policy Plan.   We focused on two key areas to enhance heat pump rollout:   1️⃣ Streamlining the path to heat pump readiness: We recognised the need for supportive measures that guide homeowners through the process of preparing their homes for heat pump installation, even before applying for grants like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). Streamlining these steps— such as conducting heat surveys and assessing energy efficiency measures— can help make the transition smoother and more accessible for everyone.   2️⃣ Expanding policy flexibility: Nesta discussed the importance of building flexibility into policy instruments to empower consumers to adopt a wider range of technologies. Expanding the BUS to include energy efficiency measures not only enhances home performance but also reduces operational costs for heat pumps. Additionally, integrating Grid-Enhancing Technologies (GETs) can optimise our grid and lower costs. The combination of heat pumps with energy efficiency improvements can lead to substantial savings, proving that collaborative policy efforts can truly benefit homeowners and the environment.   Looking forward to continued discussions on how we can make our homes heat pump ready! 🔧💡     #HeatPumps #CleanHeat  #EnergyEfficiency #Nesta

Can you measure home heat loss in the Autumn and Spring? ⛅   As part of their Heat Pump Ready project, Hoare Lea, City Science and Purrmetrix have been investigating whether the heat loss monitoring season could be extended to Spring and Autumn as well as Winter, without compromising the accuracy of the results.   Current best practice in the UK is to monitor heat loss from November to March, to coincide with the core heating season. However, this project looked at the impact of extending the monitoring season from early October to early May.   They found that the accuracy of heat loss calculations is more dependent on temperature than the calendar month. Their investigations suggest that heat loss measurements can be performed from early October to early May, provided that the weather is cold enough. Technically speaking, there need to be at least 2000 degree hours (the number of hours where the outdoor temperature is below 15.5C) to achieve robust test results.   So, can you measure heat loss in the Autumn and Spring? In short, yes, provided the weather is cold enough. But a greater number of degree hours leads to greater confidence in the results, so this should be the priority.   #HeatPumpReady #NetZero #HeatPump #LowCarbonHeat

  • What do the public think of heat pumps?    ✅ Public support for heat pumps is stronger than expected: Thermly, supported by Heat Pump Ready, spoke to customers directly and found that, although upgrading to a heat pump system can be a significant investment, customers are receptive to it because they understand the need for environment change. 💡Customer concerns are different to industry concerns: Customers want to understand fundamental topics, such as how heat pumps work, how noisy they are and how to access government grants, rather than SCOP ratings, network capacity and heat loss calculation accuracy, which are mostly industry concerns. 📗 Customers want reliable, comprehensive advice that is tailored to their specific situation: Customers need the facts to support and guide them through the process, which is the aim of Thermly’s digital platform.
