We’re one of the UK’s leading disability charities. We’re here to help people with sight loss live the life they choose.
About us
We are Guide Dogs. And we’re here to help people with sight loss live the life they choose. Children and adults. Friends and family. Whoever you are, our expert staff, volunteers and life-changing dogs are here to help you: Live actively. Our people and dogs can help you get out and about with confidence, going wherever school, work, or play takes you – and knowing that your sight loss won’t hold you back. Live independently. The advice and skills we provide will give you the freedom to live life on your own terms, in your own way, so that you can achieve your hopes and ambitions, and do all the things that make you… you. Live well. Our experience and understanding can help you through the emotional challenges of sight loss as well as the practical ones, introducing you to an inspiring community of people with similar experiences and giving you the support you need to be your best self. We have an amazing community of over 15,500 volunteers across the UK. We’re also almost entirely reliant on donations to continue our life-changing work. There are many different ways you can support us, find out more at guidedogs.org.uk.

Join us in congratulating guide dog owner John Hardy, who’s been recognised in the New Year Honours List 🎉 John’s been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to the veteran community. He was nominated for his work volunteering for Blind Veterans UK at the Bridgwater Community Hub. A Guide Dogs spokesperson said: “Congratulations to John on his well-deserved award. What John’s done to support his local community is amazing and we’re delighted he’s been recognised in this way. Thank you to Blind Veterans UK for nominating John. “We know what a huge contribution John makes, including in his volunteer role as a speaker for Guide Dogs. This involves sharing his own story with different local audiences and raising awareness of our work. John’s also a vocal campaigner who’s spoken out when he’s encountered illegal access refusals with his guide dog, helping to highlight this important issue. “It’s lovely to hear that John’s guide dog Sid has played a big part in enabling John to achieve all he has. Well done to you both!” [Visual description: John and his wife Colleen stand together on a lawn at the back of Buckingham Palace while attending a garden party. As 2024 draws to a close, we’re looking back on what has been a great year for Guide Dogs Academy. We have: - Welcomed 22 new learners, reaching our milestone of recruiting 100 learners since Academy began - Contributed 78 guide dog and service user partnerships to the business - Celebrated 10 learner graduations None of this is possible without the hard work of our learners and their coaches, or the support of colleagues and volunteers. So we’d like to say a huge thankyou and hope you enjoy a well-earned break! [Image Description: person sitting down on rug next to Golden Retriever laying down. Meet the class of 2024! 🐶 This year we accepted a total of 123 potential guide dog mums and dads into our Breeding Programme, with 105 still on the programme. These are dogs that are identified as having the right traits, such as temperament, health, and behavior to contribute to the next generation of guide dogs. This is critical to ensure future guide dogs are well-suited for their life-changing roles. 🐾 Tune in to episode 1 of our Journey of a Guide Dog series to find out more about genetics and breeding - https://bit.ly/49Sl2Jt [Visual description: Image shows a collage of headshots of approx. 130 dogs.
