They have to continuously search for food at all times, consuming up to three times their weight in insects, worms and other small animals every day. If they stop, they can die of starvation within three hours. They trap and digest insects in their fluid-filled pitchers to supplement their nutrient intake in areas with low soil nitrogen content. However, one type of pitcher plant stands out from the rest. Instead of attracting insects with odors or digestive juices, it has evolved to become a perfect roost for woolly bats. The woolly bats sleep in the pitcher plant during the day, and their droppings provide a rich source of nitrogen for the plant. The shape of this pitcher plant is unusual and ideal for a sleeping bat, and can be easily detected by the bats using echolocation. The inner wall of the pitcher has a waxy texture that deters egg-laying insects, providing a pest-free home for the bats. The bat provides feces to the plant, and the plant provides a safe and comfortable roost for the bat. The pitcher plant is highly dependent on the bat, as this pitcher is not particularly good at catching insects. The interdependency between pitcher plants and woolly bats is a remarkable example of mutualism in the animal world, demonstrating how different species can evolve to benefit each other in their struggle for survival. Though their length of gestation (period of developing inside the womb between conception and birth) differs. Today, I will be us taking through the length of gestation of some common animals and the terminologies used for the act of parturition (giving birth) in these animals. 1. Goat/Sheep: 150 days 2. Cow: 283 days 3. Pig: 115days 4. Rabbit: 28days 5. Horse: 330 - 365days 6. Guinea pig: 59 - 72days 7. Dog: 57 - 65days We have different terminologies we use for parturition of different animals as well: 1. Calving: The act of giving birth in Cattle. 2. Lambing: The act of giving birth in sheep. 3. Kidding: The act of giving birth in goat. 4. Farrowing: The act of giving birth in pig. 5. Welping: The act of giving birth in dog. 6. Kindling: The process of giving birth in rabbit. 7. Semelparity may sound unusual, but it’s common in the plant kingdom. Consider annual plants vs perennials. Some animal species are also semelparous, for example, Pacific salmon die after spawning. Male kalutas, Australian marsupials, are also semelparous. As the NYT describes it: “During these brief, frenzied breeding seasons, male kalutas mate with several females -- for up to 14 hours at a time -- until they succumb to exhaustion and die.” Talk about going out with a bang! In this blog post, Animal Turn Fellow Virginia Thomas writes about "heck cattle." Some key highlights from the post: Heck Cattle are named after the Heck Brothers who first bred them, created them really, in the 1920s and 30s. Heinz and Lutz Heck were German zoologists who managed the Munich and Berlin zoos respectively. They bred the animals in a deliberate attempt to recreate extinct wild bovines, the aurochs, from whom domestic cattle are descended. Part of their motivation was linked to their association with the German National Socialist party. The Nazi ideology of eugenics extended to animals as well as people, and they were interested in producing a ‘master race’ of cattle for the Third Reich. Despite concerns over their provenance and their authenticity, Heck Cattle have been embraced by rewilding advocates because of their potential to help regenerate wilder landscapes; large herbivores are seen as crucial in landscape creation so are a key element of rewilding projects, particularly in Europe. But rewilding, like Heck Cattle themselves, is controversial. While it’s heralded as the holy grail of ecological restoration by its proponents, others have concerns over rewilding, particularly over how much, or how little, human intervention is involved. Across all species, including production animals, health and welfare can only be optimal when animals are kept within the anatomical, physiological and behavioural evolutionary norms for their species. This poses major challenges in controlling endemic diseases in intensive production systems, such as TB in large dairy herds, where the impact of aberrant physiological and behavioural norms can severely impact Innate Health. In particular, Freedom to express innate behaviour needs more metrics and focus.
