Summer camps start tomorrow and I am so curious what the stories will be this year…
I create my camps to allow for a lot of flexibility, there are way too many variables for me to cling to a strict schedule and expect to feel successful at the end of the day. I go into each camp day with a plan- but the success of the day isn’t determined by us adhering to the plan but instead by how we handle the obstacles that show up along the way.
I love teaching kids how to cook, chop wood, archery, animal care, etc. but what I really am passionate about is teaching them leadership skills which starts with knowing how to lead oneself.
Every camper no matter their age is told they are capable of being a leader. They are treated by me with the same respect that I give to the adults who come here. I tell them I have confidence in their ability to take accountability for mistakes because mistakes are expected and perfection is not a requirement of leadership.
I want them to feel a sense of agency and the confidence to use that freedom to do what they want to do when they want to- which is hard for many who spend the year with every minute scheduled out. Between activities they get to just be kids. Playing with the goats and chickens or in the treehouse or in the timber… there are games set out to play, every type of swing imaginable, ninja courses, slack lines, art project… it’s up to them to decide how to spend their time.
I believe kids are capable of more than we allow them to believe they are. They aren’t often given the chance to fail without someone swooping in to fix it for them. The parents who send their kids here do so because they value giving kids a chance to prove that they are capable of falling AND getting back up again. Kids are empowered to solve their own problems and see the opportunities within the obstacles. Oh and have a ton of fun in the process.
Each week I share a stories from camp, moments of leadership inspiration from kids. I can’t wait to share them with you all!
