Building a cross-sector research community to support an equitable transition to a net zero future in Scotland.
About us
We are an interdisciplinary, cross-sector research alliance that brings researchers across disciplines and institutions in Scotland together with industry, business, policy, and the third sector. Operating with an ethos of inclusive collaboration, we work to ensure that information- and expertise-sharing happen between different stakeholders. We organise events, workshops, and residentials that can offer training, build expertise, and expand networks for our stakeholders. We facilitate multi-institutional collaborations and provide seed funding for cross-sectoral research projects on relevant topics. We strengthen our stakeholders’ capacity to engage with and contribute to policy-making at local and national levels in Scotland. In all our activities, we are particularly dedicated to early career researchers, supporting their capacity building and growing their network for interdisciplinary, collaborative research. By driving leadership for cross-sector interdisciplinary research, the Alliance is committed to helping create an equitable transition to a net zero future in Scotland. Alliance activities are organised according to three overlapping themes: Decarbonising Heat, Financial Pathways, and Sustainable Households. The Alliance is led by a multi-institutional team directed by Dr Mette High. Today I represented the Scottish Research Alliance for Energy, Homes and Livelihoods at an event on Scotland's response to #COP16 on biodiversity and #COP29 on climate. When it comes to 'Net Zero' discussions, there is of course much focus on carbon emissions - how much CO2 will not be emitted if a given intervention is undertaken? What does the intervention do to Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions? Etc. But it is really important to also apply a broader perspective that recognises the wider implications of interventions. As co-lead for the Alliance's #FinancialPathways theme Andrew Sudmant emphasised, interventions often bring substantial indirect social benefits, far beyond carbon emissions, and currently the data on these co-benefits is rarely embedded in action. This is a missed opportunity for understanding the full significance of interventions and making sound evidence-led decisions for our future. I'm excited to see the new Co-Benefits Atlas tool, which is now in the making!
