As we reach the end of another year, we wanted to reflect on what's been a rewarding 12 months for the practice by compiling our year in photos. From securing new project wins, including Cambridge Civic Quarter, to celebrating the practical completion of Yarm School, Island, and Leonardo, 2024 has been full of milestones. Along the way, we’ve also welcomed three new 'CP' babies and expanded our team with seven talented new practitioners. Just last week, we came together to celebrate these achievements at our Christmas parties, raising a well-deserved toast to the dedication and hard work of our wonderful team. We look to #2025 and wish you a joyful holiday season and a prosperous New Year! #HappyHolidays #HappyNewYear 🌟 🌟 🌟

Over the last week, we’ve been shining a spotlight on our urban development projects across the UK, celebrating milestones from this year while looking ahead to the future. Today, we’re at Island, our net zero workspace in the heart of Manchester. We’ve just announced practical completion, marking a major step forward for this cutting edge building. Island, located on John Dalton Street, is already making waves, with 46,000sq ft pre let to Virgin Media O2. This workspace is set to be a hub of activity and innovation, leading the way in sustainable design with top tier credentials, including: 👉 BREEAM ‘Excellent’. 👉 EPC A rating. 👉 5 NABERS Independent Design Review rating*, with ambitions to reach 5.5* by leveraging smart technology and working closely with occupiers to reduce energy use even further. 🎧 “The second oldest profession in the world” has lost its mojo over the last fifty years and Architects have lost much of the authority that they used to enjoy. Link to listen in first comment ⬇️ James Pickard, Co-Founder and Principal at employee-owned of Cartwright Pickard talks to Mark Wakeford about the changing role of the Architect, the importance of recognising the values that the profession can provide and its opportunities to support the sector and its clients. James explores the Building Safety Act, technology and the ever increasing sustainability agenda, noting that only Architects are trained to discuss these competing priorities. James is very positive about the future and the potential for construction to change people’s lives for the better. #buildingsafety #architects #buildingsafetyact

Last week Vistry Group London team were joined by partners SNG (Sovereign Network Group), Grainger PLC and Ealing Council (London Borough of Ealing) to celebrate the topping out of the Merrick Place development in Southall. Designed by Cartwright Pickard, Merrick Place addresses London’s housing demand by bringing 575 high-quality, sustainable, mixed-tenure homes through a mix of affordable housing and Build-To-Rent tenures alongside vibrant commercial spaces, to this burgeoning area of West London; marking a significant step forward in the transformation of a former light industrial site on Merrick Road, contributing to Ealing’s broader regeneration goals and enhancing the area’s connectivity through proximity to Southall railway station. A new independent report from the Older Person's Housing Taskforce highlights the urgent need to build 30-50,000 additional homes each year to support the UK's ageing population. Current figures suggest we are building approximately 7,000. The report continues to present 10 key considerations that call for a shift in the design and development of homes for later living to address this shortfall. These considerations place a strong emphasis on wellbeing, inclusivity, and community, all of which are critical to ensuring that older people can live independently, comfortably, and with dignity. We're delighted to see the release of this landmark report and thank the OPHT for their reference to our Age-inclusive design principles, the culmination of a two-year Knowledge Transfer Partnership, funded by Innovate UK in collaboration with The Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design. What a difference 6 years make! Cartwright Pickard's involvement with this project began in June 2018 and this week we reached the significant milestone of Practical Completion. From a personal perspective I could not be prouder of our team who have put in so much hard work and dedication to get us here. I think most people in the practice have been involved at some stage or other so it truly has been a group effort. Despite some pretty significant challenges along they way - including a pandemic - the team remained steadfast and focused on delivering on the promises and intent we set at competition stage to help create one of the most innovative and sustainable workspaces in the UK. A massive thank you to our clients HBD and Greater Manchester Pension Fund who have been incredibly supportive throughout this whole process - maintaining a clarity of vision to ensure we retained the integrity and quality of the project despite some very difficult viability challenges. A final thankyou to the rest of the wider team - we've been fortunate to work with industry leading consultants and contractors who have provided invaluable insight and expertise to help shape the strategies and approach to all aspects of the design and delivery. Can't wait to see the building occupied next year... Bowmer and Kirkland Ltd Curtins Cundall Gardiner & Theobald LLP Gleeds CBRE Find out more: https://lnkd.in/ePfbryiZ

HBD and our joint venture partners, Greater Manchester Pension Fund, have announced the practical completion of Island - our 100,000sq ft net zero carbon, smart enabled office scheme in Manchester city centre. Speaking of the news, our MD Ed Hutchinson said: “Island is so much more than just an office; it is a highly intelligent, collaborative working environment, designed to meet people’s health and wellbeing needs as well as helping businesses to achieve optimal operational efficiencies.” Located on John Dalton Street in the heart of Manchester city centre, Island has been built by Bowmer and Kirkland Ltd who commenced work in 2022 and have now achieved the on budget completion of the landmark building. Designed by Cartwright Pickard, Island is targeting an array of industry leading sustainability credentials including BREEAM ‘Excellent’ and an EPC A rating. It has already achieved a 5* NABERS Independent Design Review rating. By harnessing smart technology and by working closely with occupiers, Island is targeting further energy reductions to reach a 5.5* rating. The milestone comes just weeks after our announcement of a 46,000sq ft pre let to telecommunications giant, Virgin Media O2 which has signed a 10 year lease at Island. The pre let means that only the remaining four floors of 10,000sq ft are available to let. Reimagining Cambridge's Historic Heart 🌟 Following an intensive summer engagement programme with Cambridge locals and visitors of the City, we've published our proposals for the transformation of Cambridge Civic Quarter - encompassing the Guildhall, Corn Exchange, Market Square and the surrounding public spaces. These plans reflect the distinct needs of Cambridge's vibrant community and seek to create a dynamic focal point that honours the city’s rich heritage while addressing modern challenges. Highlights include: ✅ Reimagining the Guildhall by sensitively opening it up for mixed use ✅ Enhancing the Corn Exchange by increasing event capacity and activating Parson’s Court passageway ✅ Revitalising the Market Square with an accessible shared surface and flexible structures to encourage greater public use Underpinned by net zero ambitions and a commitment to safeguarding frontline council services, these designs mark a significant step in shaping a more inclusive and sustainable future of the City of Cambridge. The proposals will be discussed and reviewed by councillors on November 21st - marking an important milestone in this transformative journey. We thank both Cambridge City Council and a dedicated consortium team for their vital contributions and support over the last six months. 📣 We've published our latest proposals for Cambridge Market, Cambridge Corn Exchange and the Guildhall (council HQ), and the surrounding public spaces. As custodian of these historic sites, the council needs to invest in their upkeep, and plans to do so in a way that will generate income and reduce operational costs as part our wider plans to balance our budget. Our ambition is to ensure these attractions are fit for a 21st century, offering a focal point that residents can be proud of, while making the heritage buildings net zero and accessible and improving biodiversity, water efficiency and accessibility across the area. These proposals will be discussed by councillors on 21 November. If approved, there is much more work to be done through design and planning before any work would start on site (not until October 2026 at the earliest). https://lnkd.in/eMnNKdkX
