Toilets are a place for peace, dignity, and health. Yet globally, 3.5 billion people live without access to safe bathrooms. For many, sanitation access is threatened by conflict, climate change, disasters, reliable funding, and neglect. However, we are actively changing this reality. Watch government partners, community leaders, and the Water For People team in Uganda celebrate the inauguration of new toilet facilities at schools last month in honor of #WorldToiletDay. Together, we can transform lives and improve health for communities in Uganda and beyond. WASH and health connect! We are thrilled to share the story of IRC's impactful work in connecting WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) and health in the communities of Bunyangabu district, in western Uganda, as told by the national newspaper The New Vision Printing and Publishing Company Ltd. The story tells how IRCWASH collective action with Bunyangabu District Local Government has inspired change in the communities through the home sanitation improvement campaigns and in the healthcare facilities through WASH for infection prevention and control approaches. “I am a winner because I work hard for it. Cleanliness means health, and health is the real wealth. We must stay alive to thrive,” says Abwooli Atugonza, 32, a mother, subsistence farmer and winner of the home improvement campaigns in Kiyombya village. When the New Vision’s @Gerald Tenywa visited the communities to source this story, he was amazed that ordinary people such as Abwooli Atugonza are the real change makers because they practice what is prescribed in the National Sanitation and Hygiene Guidelines: a clean, exclusive latrine with a handwashing point, a clean kitchen, a utensils’ rack, a designated shelter for domestic animals, a clean main house and a bathing shelter. But policy does not easily translate into action, unless all the stakeholders work together. Jane Mbabazi, a janitor and porter at Rwimi health center III shared her frustration that the new medical incinerator had not come without problems. “People [from the private health facilities in the neighbourhood] bring unsegregated waste mixed with sharp objects, syringes and gloves, and dump at our gate,” she says.
