Reducing emissions in waterborne transport is key to achieve the 2030 climate targets. Today, the NAUTILUS project is in the spotlight as part of our social media campaign "Meet the Projects". Horizon Europe and the Partnership on Zero-Emission Waterborne Transport are key funding tools to enhance Technology Leadership in the WaterborneTP sector. The NAUTILUS genset efficiently managed fluctuating ship energy demands, from 30% part-load to 120% peak load, with sharp transitions. Its advanced energy management unit optimized power distribution between SOFC and battery, minimizing installed power requirements. The demonstrator achieved 64% (LHV_DC) and 57% (LHV_AC) efficiency, reducing CO₂ emissions by 30%, non-CO₂ pollutants by 95%, and exhibiting negligible methane slip compared to conventional engines. With an estimated Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) of 0.29 EUR/kWh, NAUTILUS technology proves both environmentally impactful and economically viable, paving the way for sustainable maritime energy solutions. WATERBORNE is as an industry-oriented Technology Platform to establish a dialogue between all waterborne stakeholders
About us
WATERBORNE has been set up as an industry-oriented Technology Platform to establish a continuous dialogue between all waterborne stakeholders, such as classification societies, shipbuilders, shipowners, maritime equipment manufacturers, infrastructure and service providers, universities or research institutes, and with the EU Institutions, including Member States. The strategic objectives of the WATERBORNE TP are: - Establish a continuous dialogue between all stakeholders in the waterborne transport sector and in other waterborne-related sectors on R&D; - Contribute to the widest possible consensus regarding R&D and to focusing of efforts and resources; - Develop a common medium- and long-term R&D Vision and a Strategic Research Agenda (SRA); - Contribute to the appropriate mobilisation and allocation of the necessary financial resources (private/regional/national/EU sources); - Contribute to the social expectations regarding clean, competitive and safe waterborne transport as well as regarding other waterborne-related activities, including education and training. For WATERBORNE to reach its goals, it is necessary to engage all relevant stakeholders of the European maritime industry, such as classification societies, manufacturers, research institutes, shipyards, shipowners, or universities, as well as the European Institutions and Member States. This approach should ensure that, whilst national policies will vary according to particular challenges, effective mechanisms are developed to enable adequate research coordination and cooperation between the relevant stakeholders at EU/EEA level.

Hydrogen is one of the sustainable alternative fuels for the waterborne transport sector. Today, the sHYpS project is in the spotlight as part of our social media campaign "Meet the Projects". Horizon Europe and the Partnership on Zero-Emission Waterborne Transport are key funding tools to enhance Technology Leadership in the WaterborneTP sector. the sHYpS Project aims to develop a novel hydrogen storage intermodal 45’ ISO c-type container, the complete detailed design of modular containerised powertrain based on optimised PEM Fuel Cells and their dedicated logistics. The project will use the window of opportunity of a Viking Cruises’ newbuilds vessel to install the storage system onboard with the complete gas handling and energy management system. The power train will be initially tested on land and then on board. The project, thanks to its modular size, will enable the development of a system capable of sustaining a total power generation of 6 MW based on 16 fuel cell modules split in 2 containers. The integration on-board of the fuel system and its auxiliaries will be developed and the compliance with the safety requirements will be guaranteed. Wind-assisted propulsion has a significant potential to reduce emissions from waterborne transport. Today, the Optiwise project is in the spotlight as part of our social media campaign "Meet the Projects". Horizon Europe and the Partnership on Zero-Emission Waterborne Transport are key funding tools to enhance Technology Leadership in the WaterborneTP sector. Optiwise EU will deliver three concept designs of vessels that are optimised for operating with wind assisted propulsion. As use cases a cruise vessel, tanker and bulk carrier are design with solid sails, Oceanwings, and Rotor sails respectively. Model tests, wind tunnel tests, and site tests, complemented with simulations have been done for these use cases to demonstrate the operational benefits.
