𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐄 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐬 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐮𝐥𝐞å    To fulfill the growing demands associated with the green transition in Sweden’s northern region, the new Port of Luleå (Luleå Hamn) needs to increase its cargo handling capacity by four times within the next six years. Åsa Kärnebro, former harbor master in Gothenburg and now senior advisor at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, supports the Port of Luleå management in refining and broaden sustainable solutions for the port's expansion and future operations.   - 600 port calls annually are expected to become 2,500 port calls annually, says Åsa Kärnebro. Furthermore, 8 million tons of cargo is expected to become 30 million tons of cargo annually. This expansion involves crucial tasks such as ship loading and unloading, logistics management, warehousing, and facilitating the flow of goods on behalf of Port of Luleå. The port call process needs to be safe, efficient and sustainable.   Åsa's solid experience as a key person in maritime Sweden rhymes well with the competent work force of Port of Luleå, and she is proud to now work closely together with Port of Luleå traffic coordinator Ellen Dyverfeldt, among others.   - A port is a complex ecosystem of its own, a nautical chain if you like. You need to understand what laws govern a public port including the obligations and rights of the municipal port area. A clear understanding of each stakeholder’s role and needs is essential.   The perspective that everything is interconnected aligns seamlessly with a focus on monitoring and safety thinking.   - You need a broad perspective. This includes the importance of structured information sharing between stakeholders, guidelines for waste management, and ensuring the strength of bollards for safe mooring. And not least, identifying who is responsible for what.   RISE is and will always be an independent advisor.   - Here, in the Port of Luleå, there is a service function on top of that to consider.

𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐥 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝'𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐝-𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐂𝐓𝐂 𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐥   Wallenius Marine AB together with RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, Kungliga Tekniska högskolan and Oceanbird are gathering in Gothenburg for several important tests. The tests are carried out in one of Europe's most advanced wind tunnels at Volvo Cars in Gothenburg, at wind speeds of up to 140 km/h.    Says Frederik Gerhardt, Lead Naval Architect at RISE: - This is an important milestone for the realization of the world's first wind-powered PCTC. The tests we are conducting are extremely challenging, so thanks to the very professional RISE team of measurement technicians, workshop personnel, designers, and naval architects that make them possible.   The aim is to confirm the latest design for wind-powered PCTC vessels, a groundbreaking innovation in maritime transportation.   Test areas include:   - Interaction between the ship's hull and six high-tech wing sails. - Testing of optimal hull-to-wing spacing for highest performance. - Testing of three different types of bridges and their impact on ship performance. - How off design conditions affect the operation of the ship, for example if a wing sail is at the wrong angle or position.   The tests are carried out by the maritime department of RISE, which has also built a 5 x 2-meter model using advanced technology. The model weighs 1, 2 tons and is used to simulate the performance of the entire ship in the wind tunnel. Often, wing sails are tested independently without a hull, but the combination of hull and multiple wings, in a large tunnel with a large model, is what makes this test unique. #PCTC #windpoweredpctc #windtunneltests #windpropulsion #advancedshipdesign #wingsails
