On November 14-15, #GRANULAR researchers Breixo Martins and Maria Isabel Doval Ruiz from the Universidade de Vigo presented our innovative project at the 1st FIREPOCTEP+ Sustainability Workshop and Training Session in San Xoán de Río, Spain. This event, organised by the FINNOVA FOUNDATION as part of the INTERREG POCTEP FIREPOCTEP+ initiative, spotlighted our shared mission to tackle climate risks—like forest fires—through collaboration and community-driven solutions. We are very happy to inform you that yesterday, 75 professionals gathered at the #GRANULAR Knowledge Transfer Accelerator webinar organised by AEIDL (European Association for Innovation in Local Development) to discuss the critical role of granular data in empowering rural areas. The event showcased inspiring presentations on: ✔️ Rural Innovation - Simone Sasso (JRC) revealed unexpected entrepreneurial dynamism in certain rural areas and sectoral trends such as the presence of high-tech industries. ✔️ Data benchmarking - Experts from International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and Natural Resources Institute Finland / Luonnonvarakeskus explored innovative data sources (e.g. big data, Open Street Maps) to discover rural diversity and benchmark EU rural data landscapes. ✔️ Rural Observatory - A JRC initiative providing experimental indicators to understand land use, connectivity and renewable energy potential in rural regions. 📌 Living Labs - Practical applications of local data from #France and #Spain demonstrated how rural communities can harness data for policy making on mobility, forest management and population ageing. On 19 November 2024, #GRANULAR held its online General Assembly to reflect on achievements and the way forward for rural development. Focused on empowering rural communities, the assembly brought together stakeholders to address challenges and outline solutions tailored to rural needs.
