Alessandra Cardaci and I started working at the Association of European Border Regions (AEBR) at the very start of the Interreg Volunteer Youth initiative, and found together the first hosts and volunteers back in 2017. What a progress since then! Everyone I met while working on Interreg Volunteer Youth has been a great source of inspiration: audacious mentors, ambitious volunteers, supportive and highly motivated colleagues at the Association of European Border Regions (AEBR), at DG REGIO and partner institutions. Everyone showed unwavering passion and belief for this project, and it's a huge joy to see now 1000 volunteers and mentors matched. 🌍🚍 Did you know that around 5,000 residents from Italy’s Ventimiglia basin commute to France daily for work? Similarly, many people from Menton and the French Riviera cross into Italy during the tourist season. Unfortunately, cross-border public transport options are lacking during busy periods, with insufficient bus lines and ferry routes. 🚍🌍 The municipality of Ventimiglia, along with the Communauté de la Riviera française - CARF, sought help from b-solutions expert to address the obstacles and explore solutions for enhancing cross-border mobility 🚉🌐. 🚀 Structural change, digitalisation, and globalisation are altering job demands. The Allgäu Labour Study (2022) shows 54% of companies face severe labour shortages in the region, with 45% citing lack of qualifications.  The German-Austrian border region needs a stronger cross-border labour market to tap into talent on both sides. But, differences in vocational education systems and diploma recognition are obstacles to be overcome. b-solutions experts Roland Gaugitsch and Erich Dallhammer from ÖIR GmbH have analysed these obstacles and suggested some solutions. 📗 At the Art of Cooperation conference in Budapest, AEBR's President Karl-Heinz Lambertz addresses the audience of cooperation makers as avant-gardiste artists for their efforts in cooperating across borders. To continue to do so, we need to invest in Cohesion Policy and strengthen trust. Speakers of the first panel also pointed to the importance of deepening cooperation while also adapting Interreg, the most important tool for territories and citizens. A stronger and more connected Interreg will better respond to common challenges of current times. We look forward to continuing improving Interreg and cross-border cooperation together, also learning from the important lessons drawn with b-solutions.
