The future of a 161-year-old iconic Brisbane pub is in doubt after the landowner’s U-turn decision. A development application was submitted by developer JGL PROJECTS LTD to the Brisbane City Council to extend the proposed area for partial demolition. The updated plan included a consent form from property owner Archdiocese of Brisbane Planning and Building Director Patrick Lane-Mullins and Archdiocesan Services and Archdiocesan Development Fund Executive Director Andrew Musial. Urban planner Urbis said the change involved additional demolition of a building section at the rear of the early masonry structure. #hospitality #brisbane #queensland #pub

UK sports streaming heavyweight DAZN will become the new owner of TV major Foxtel Group in a blockbuster deal set to shake up Australia’s media and sport landscape. The $3.4bn deal marks the end of News Corp’s long-running ownership of Foxtel, after launching the pay television service three decades ago and building it into a sport and streaming powerhouse with nearly five million paying subscribers. Foxtel’s junior partner Telstra, also involved from the start, has offloaded its 35 per cent stake as part of the sale. However, News Corp and Telstra will emerge with a combined 9 per cent stake in DAZN as part of the acquisition.

Queensland has only half the construction workers it needs for a growing $47bn infrastructure pipeline, with the critical shortfall increasing as the state gets closer to the 2032 Olympic Games. The major 2024 Market Capacity Report by Infrastructure Australia has also warned the state’s construction industry — and the public purse — will have to grapple with an ongoing increase in the cost of building materials like timber, copper and sand. But in a small reprieve, there is a growing chance Queensland’s projects could be delivered closer to planned budgets as a fall in investment in southern states helps ease overall market demand. Infrastructure Australia chief executive Adam Copp said skill shortages, rising material costs and a 30-year stagnation in construction productivity continued to impact the nation’s ability to build. A tunnel under Vulture St and a second Gabba is the “obvious solution” to solve Brisbane’s Olympic stadium problems, a new submission insists. Kirk Architects is proposing ‘Gabba West’ be built above the Woolloongabba Cross River Rail site to sit alongside the current, smaller, Gabba. In a joint proposal, Kirk director Rickard Kirk and principal Andrew Magub say the near-empty site is the “most accessible site in the city”. #brisbane2032 #brisbaneolympics #olympics #gabba

Queensland’s largest independently owned and operated pub and liquor retail group has added another accommodation venue to its expanding portfolio with the purchase of a regional hotel. Star Group has doubled down on its Queensland expansion strategy by acquiring Rydges Hotels & Resorts Mackay Suites and the Mackay Central Retail Centre on Gregory St in the central Queensland city. The purchase, which is believed to be around $30m, follows the group’s $60m settlement of the acquisition of Rydges Gold Coast Airport.
