Premier manufacturing research and development centre focused on delivering for tomorrow’s industrial innovation leaders
About us
The Australian Research Council (ARC) Industrial Transformation Training Centre in Surface Engineering for Advanced Materials (SEAM) will be Australia’s premier manufacturing Research and Development centre that focuses on applied research with tangible outcomes to nurture and cultivate the industrial innovation leaders of tomorrow. The Centre aspires to provide an excellent environment for carrying out research, explore projects with industry, government and other organisation. SEAM will target the training of early career researchers in an industrial context and build an international research collaborative network and pursue ambitious outcomes that are reflected as industry-fit researchers providing a commercial benefits for industry. The outcomes of the applied research and Intellectual Property creation will promote new commercial ventures for Australian and international entrepreneurs. Three surface engineering themes form the technological foundation of SEAM, and promote interactions between and among these technologies, these are: thin films, thick coatings and additive manufacturing.

Final Stage of the Additive Manufacturing CRC Bid Completed! On Tuesday, 10th December, the Additive Manufacturing CRC bid team successfully completed their Round 2 application, including an interview with the CRC Advisory Committee. Led by Susan Jeanes (Chair) and Simon Marriott (CEO), the AMCRC team comprised Frank Wagner(Research Director), Jennifer Loy (Education Lead), and Kathie McGregor (Interim Program Lead). They were joined by industry and network partner representatives: Lorraine Maxwell (Chiroiu) (AMTIL ), Matthew Wall (Boeing), and John Barnes (The Barnes Global Advisors). In the two days leading up to the interview, the team came together in person in Canberra for the first time to prepare. Supported by Greg Spinks and Jennifer Lieu from Consulting & Implementation Services (CIS) for mock presentations and Q&A sessions. Special thanks also go to Milan Brandt and Matthew Young (PhD) for their assistance during this crucial phase. The Additive Manufacturing CRC team extends heartfelt thanks to all our partners for their support in helping us reach this significant milestone. We eagerly await the announcement of outcomes from Round 25 and wish the best of luck to all other bids. #AdditiveManufacturing #AMCRC #Innovation #AdvancedManufacturing #3DPrinting #Collaboration #ResearchAndDevelopment #Technology #ManufacturingIndustry

About corrosion and microbes… Is biofilm formation and microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) only present in pipes that have stagnant fluids? So, under continuous flow conditions, MIC should not be considered a contributor to the corrosion process? Find out more about it during Scott Wade’s presentation at the Symposium MIC in Industrial and Utility Systems 21-23 January 2025 at the University of Nicosia within the umbrella of EuroMIC-European MIC Network and CyMIC. https://lnkd.in/dKdJjiUN

A great finish to the year, heading across to Adelaide to attend and speak at #CAMS2024, hosted by Materials Australia. Not only did I have the chance to present some of my work on the oxidation behaviour of #highentropyalloys, I also got to listen to some very interesting talks from numerous fields that spanned just about every topic imaginable; 3D-printed hermit crab shells made from recycled zirconia dental implants? Tell me more! A big thanks, of course, to SEAM_ARC who give me such incredible opportunities to grow, and to all of the team at Swinburne for their support, and advice on fine-tuning my presentation 🙏

Adelaide greeted us with hot weather, but it’s nothing compared to the blazing advancements in materials research! This week, I had the opportunity to present at #CAMS2024, organised by Materials Australia and hosted at University of South Australia, where I shared my research on the application of electropolishing technology—a project I worked on during my last semester at Swinburne. Additionally, I also got to showcase our cutting edge EXP-SF stream finishing technology developed at ANCA CNC Machines. The conference was a great chance to meet new people, catch up with familiar faces and get update on the latest trends in materials research. A heartfelt thank you to SEAM_ARC for supporting this incredible learning opportunity and to the Australian Ceramic Society for the Student Conference and Travel Bursary award. Especially, I’m also grateful to Dr Minh Nhat DANG and A/Prof James Wang for their invaluable guidance on this project! And shout out to the Swinburne team for their great presentations and hard work. #materialscience #materialengineer

The recent Australian Materials Conference in Adelaide was packed with innovation and collaboration. We had the pleasure of welcoming a delegation of SEAM_ARC students to our LaserBond workshop in Cavan. They got to experience laser cladding and HVOF spraying in action, and it was exciting to see the next generation of surface engineers so engaged! We were also thrilled to host Prof. Colin Hall (UniSA), Prof. Anna Paradowska (University of Sydney), and Prof. Martin Leary (RMIT University), who toured our workshop before the conference. Their expertise and insights are invaluable to our work. At the conference, Dr Anthony Roccisano presented his groundbreaking research on the wear resistance of HVOF Tungsten Carbide coatings - a key area of study for improving industrial durability. A fantastic week of learning, collaboration, and innovation! 🌟🔬 #MaterialsScience #SurfaceEngineering #LaserCladding #HVOFSpraying #Innovation #Research #AustMatConf
