Australia’s two largest iron ore miners BHP and Rio Tinto, along with BlueScope, have selected the Kwinana Industrial Area, south of Perth Western Australia as the location to develop Australia’s largest ironmaking electric smelting furnace (ESF) pilot plant—Project NeoSmelt.   The NeoSmelt parties also announced that Woodside Energy will join the consortium as an equal equity participant and energy supplier, subject to finalising commercial arrangements.   The pilot plant will initially use natural gas to reduce iron ore to direct reduced iron (DRI), but once operational, the project aims to use lower-carbon emissions hydrogen to reduce iron ore. If successful, NeoSmelt has the potential to open a pathway to near-zero emissions steelmaking using Pilbara iron ore and ensure the longevity of Australia's iron ore industry. In line with our First Nations Framework in Australia and our commitment to local communities as outlined in 'Our Bond', we were delighted to support two recent events in Wollongong, NSW: the Illawarra Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Procurement Networking Panel at Inside Industry PK and the second annual Business Expo at Wollongong Town Hall. Below, you can watch a wrap-up video featuring testimonials and footage from both functions. The Illawarra Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Business Expo, a joint initiative by Wollongong City Council and Illawarra Indigenous Business Network (IIBN), was launched in 2023 and is a part of Indigenous Business Month, which is celebrated annually in October. Over 40 local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses participated in a showcase of diverse products and services—from cultural artefacts to construction companies—highlighting the vibrant, entrepreneurial spirit within the community. The Procurement Networking Panel included speakers from government, the corporate sector and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses, emphasising the importance of integrating such organisations into supply chains. Both events provided networking opportunities and fostered collaboration and support. Held in Wollongong, the home town of Australian steel manufacturing, our Chair, Jane M. presided over her first Annual General Meeting (AGM) for BlueScope. Our AGM was again an enjoyable event, where our Directors and Executive Leaders connected with shareholders to discuss the matters that mean the most to them. Watch a video montage of the event below!   Attendees were given a heartfelt Welcome to Country by Uncle Richard Davis, and our Managing Director and CEO, Mark Vassella, announced the appointment of Michael Yiend as the Head of Property, who will be part of the Executive Leadership Team.
